Nolan North, the voice actor for Nathan Drake in the Uncharted video games, praises the recent release of the movie’s trailer. The film adaptation from director Reuben Fleischer stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan, respectively. Uncharted is scheduled to hit theaters on February 18, 2022.
Acting as a sort of origin story for the game series, Uncharted will show how Holland’s Drake becomes a treasure hunter under the tutelage of Wahlberg’s Sully, who acts as a sort of father-figure for the young protagonist. Also in the cast are Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer, another fortune hunter who becomes a love interest for Drake, and Antonio Banderas as the film’s ruthless villain. The Uncharted trailer promises audiences plenty of action set-pieces to go with the banter between the two main characters, and even shows Holland fighting a baddie while dangling off the back of an airplane.
It seems this early footage of Holland’s Drake has left the character’s original performer impressed, as North took to Twitter to share his excitement. Joking that he looked particularly good in his twenties, the voice actor compliments Uncharted‘s two stars, saying they’ve already captured the dynamic between Drake and Sully. A film adaptation of Uncharted has been in the cards for some time, as the project first went into development in 2008, just one year after the first game released to critical acclaim. The movie’s production was notoriously complicated, however, shuffling through a number of directors before Fleischer eventually stayed on for good. Wahlberg was even once rumored to be in line for Drake, but he ended up in the older Sully role once the creative team decided to make the film a prequel.
While North seems pleased with his film counterpart, fans of the games have been divided over Holland’s casting in Uncharted, along with the decision to portray a younger version of the character in the first place. When the trailer first dropped, Nathan Fillion trended on Twitter, another actor who was once rumored for the lead role and who many believe is a perfect fit for the character. For his part, Fleischer has said that Uncharted is intended for both longtime fans of the series and the uninitiated, which could explain why he chose to make the movie an origin story. Holland has proven himself a talented actor, so those skeptical of his casting might want to give him a chance to impress them when the movie actually releases.
