Umbrella Academy Renewed For Season 2 At Netflix, Filming Starts This Summer

Netflix officially renews The Umbrella Academy for season 2; the 10-episode sophomore season will start filming this summer in Toronto, Canada. Based on the comics written by Gerard Way with art by Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy season 1 launched on Netflix in February and quickly took the streaming service by storm. Critics and casual viewers alike enjoyed The Umbrella Academy’s offbeat take on superheroes, and the cliffhanger ending of The Umbrella Academy’s season 1 finale ensured many of those who watched would be eager for a second season.

The Umbrella Academy season 1 introduced viewers to the seven Hargreeves siblings: Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), Ben (Justin H. Min), and Vanya (Ellen Page). The siblings all dealt with their atypical childhoods differently and had gone their separate ways, but they’re forced back together at the start of season 1 when their father dies and they learn the world is about to end. Now, those who wanted to see more of The Umbrella Academy will be getting their wish.

Netflix officially announced The Umbrella Academy is renewed for season 2, confirming all seven of the main stars will be returning, while additional casting will be announced at a later date. Further, Netflix revealed the series will start production this summer in Toronto, Canada. On Twitter, the official Umbrella Academy account tweeted a video confirming the renewal. Take a look at the video below.

Previously, we reported that The Umbrella Academy season 2 was scouting locations around Toronto to film certain scenes, which makes sense since Netflix is opening studios in Toronto and it looks like the sophomore season of Umbrella Academy will be based there. More recently, we reported that The Umbrella Academy season 2 will film from May until September this year, which has seemingly been confirmed by Netflix, though the company doesn’t reveal any specific dates beyond “this summer.” Now, however, Netflix has officially confirmed The Umbrella Academy will return.

In terms of when The Umbrella Academy season 2 will premiere, though, it may not debut until later in 2020. Season 1 filmed January-July 2018, then premiered in February. If season 2 follows a similar pattern, and necessitates as much time in post-production for CGI, then it may not be released until April 2020. Of course, considering how popular The Umbrella Academy season 1 was for Netflix, the streaming service may want to release it sooner. Usually, seasons of Netflix shows release about a year apart, but their bigger series like Stranger Things are given more time. So, it’s unclear when The Umbrella Academy season 2 will release, but at least fans can rest assured it’s really happening.
