Umbrella Academy Already Proved Season 4’s Ending Can Be Perfect

The Umbrella Academy already proved that the season 4 series finale can be perfect. Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book series of the same name written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. The show debuted in 2019, followed by season 2 in 2020, and season 3 in 2022. Netflix has now renewed The Umbrella Academy for season 4, and announced that this will be its final season.

The Umbrella Academy show and comic have always differed, but season 4 will officially bring the show past the comic’s existing timeline and plots, leaving the ending more open and unknown than ever. The Umbrella Academy seasons 1 and 2 both ended with big time travel jumps, while season 3 ended with a universe reset after yet another apocalypse came to pass. The reset universe isn’t all fun and games, unfortunately. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, the adopted father of the Umbrella Academy and Sparrow Academy, has a hold on this new world as shown by his name plastered across buildings. The final shot of The Umbrella Academy season 3 (except for Ben’s end credits scene) showed him standing in the window of a skyscraper with his resurrected wife.

The remaining Umbrellas and Sparrows also realized that their powers are gone in the new universe. Luther was brought back to life, but his wife Sloane was unaccounted for. Despite all the unknowns facing the Umbrellas and Sparrows in this rebooted universe, such a reset might be the key to their final happy ending in The Umbrella Academy season 4.

The Most Plausible Way For Umbrella Academy Season 4 To End

The Umbrella Academy season 1 and 2 relied heavily on time travel, while season 3 showed how that time travel caused permanent damage to the timeline and the lives of the main characters. The best way to end The Umbrella Academy season 4 without dabbling in more life-altering time travel would be to trigger another universe reset—this time without Reginald behind the wheel. A new universe would give the family the chances the previous universes haven’t.

In a rebooted universe created by the Hargreeves children, they could all get a say in what they want their lives to look like. Luther and Sloane could be happily married and together. Five could return to his proper age, or stay as a teenager and finally get to live out an apocalypse-free life. Since it has been shown that resetting the universe can bring characters back to life, they could even bring back the original Umbrella Academy version of Ben. The Sparrow Academy’s Ben and Sloane could also bring their own siblings back to life. Some characters might be happier without their powers, while others might miss them.

Of course, for this possible end to The Umbrella Academy, the Hargreeves family would need to access the universe reset machine within Hotel Oblivion again. It seems likely Reginald would have cut off access to Hotel Oblivion during his own reboot, but it’s also unclear how much control the user has over the rebooted universe. It’s also possible the Hargreeves children could find another way to reset the universe, especially considering the Hotel Oblivion almost killed them. Whatever The Umbrella Academy season 4 has in store, it’s certain to be just as mind-bending as the previous seasons.
