Uh Oh, The Crow Remake’s First Images Really Worry Me (As Much As I Like Bill Skarsgård)

Uh Oh, The Crow Remake’s First Images Really Worry Me (As Much As I Like Bill Skarsgård)

A remake of The Crow is finally happening, and while Bill Skarsgård is a fantastic actor, the first images from the upcoming film are really worrying. 1994’s The Crow wasn’t a massive hit upon its release, but it has gained a cult following in the years since, leading to a remake finally happening. While Brandon Lee starred in the original film, Bill Skarsgård will be taking over the titular role in the upcoming remake. It is entirely possible that The Crow remake could be good, but the first images didn’t make a good first impression.

2024’s The Crow is a dark superhero movie based on the 1989 comic book series of the same name, with it having already been adapted to film once in 1994. The film follows Eric Draven, a young man who is murdered alongside his fiancée the night before his wedding. One year later, Draven rises from the grave and becomes a supernatural entity known as The Crow, with him unleashing vengeance on the men who killed them. A new actor will be starring in The Crow 2024, with Bill Skarsgård taking up the mantle – but it’s not looking good.

The First Look At Bill Skarsgård In The Crow Isn’t Encouraging (& Too Much Like Jared Leto’s Joker)

A first look at Bill Skarsgård in The Crow has been released, showing off the new design of Eric Draven/The Crow. However, these images aren’t encouraging. The new design of The Crow is a wildly different take when compared to Brandon Lee in the 1994 film, a look that has become iconic in the years following its release. The Crow 1994’s design was pretty comic accurate, with the goth-inspired design featuring white face paint and heavy eye makeup. The Crow 2024’s design is far different, however, with it instead using more subtle makeup and relying more on tattoos.

Weirdly enough, the design of Bill Skarsgård’s character in The Crow 2024 is strangely reminiscent of Jared Leto’s Joker design from Suicide Squad. Skarsgård’s Crow’s heavy tattoos seem very similar to the tattoos that are present on Leto’s Joker, and that’s not a comparison to be proud of. This version of The Crow looks like a mix between Suicide Squad‘s Joker and El Diablo, with it straying far away from the original design. Skarsgård’s The Crow looks much less like a comic book character than Lee’s, something that could be a problem.

The Crow Remake Already Faced An Uphill Battle – Now It’s Worse

Uh Oh, The Crow Remake’s First Images Really Worry Me (As Much As I Like Bill Skarsgård)

The 2024 The Crow remake was already facing an uphill battle before this first look was released, and the recently revealed design of Skarsgård’s The Crow has only made it worse. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding The Crow remake, with many (including the director of 1994’s The Crow Alex Proyas) being strongly against the remake. Many fans of the original view it as the legacy of Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed while filming the original movie. Some see the remake as tarnishing this legacy, with them wanting to preserve the original.

The Crow reboot is arriving after 15 years in development, and here’s everything to expect when Bill Skarsgård’s Erik Draven makes his debut.

If the sacredness of Brandon Lee’s version of The Crow is the problem that many have with the remake, then the first look at Bill Skarsgård’s The Crow is not going to ease these concerns. This drastically different design of the character is a sign that The Crow remake won’t be treating Brandon Lee’s original performance with reverence, with it potentially hurting the legacy of the first movie. This is a bad start to the marketing campaign of The Crow, and it is something that needs to be addressed in the near future.

Why The Crow Remake Could Still Be Good

Brandon Lee as Eric Draven in The Crow 1994

Although the first look at The Crow isn’t a great start, it is still possible that the remake could be good. Bill Skarsgård is a fantastic actor, and in a bubble, he is genuinely a fantastic pick for the role. Even if Skarsgård’s design in the film isn’t great, it is possible that he could still give a fantastic performance, one that stands out from Brandon Lee’s performance while still honoring the character and story’s roots.

On top of that, The Crow has some other talented artists working on it. Zach Baylin is one of the writers of the film, with him having previously worked on Creed III and Gran Turismo. FKA Twigs will also be starring in the film, with her previously having acted in Honey Boy. The Crow will also get a prime Summer 2024 release date, showing that the studio has confidence in the film. Although the first look at 2024’s The Crow remake doesn’t inspire confidence, it is still possible that the film could work.
