Twisters Doubles Down On A Terrifying Tornado Moment From The $495 Million Original Movie

Twisters Doubles Down On A Terrifying Tornado Moment From The 5 Million Original Movie

The new Twisters footage unveiled at CinemaCon has confirmed why the sequel’s title is pluralized – and it calls back to the scariest moment from the original movie. Directed by Minari’s Lee Isaac Chung from a script by The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith, Twisters is the long-awaited sequel to the classic 1996 disaster movie Twister. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell star as a pair of storm chasers who risk their lives to test a new weather alert system in the midst of a destructive wave of tornadoes.

Ahead of its release on July 19, 2024, new footage from Twisters has been revealed at CinemaCon. This footage shows Anthony Ramos’ character Javi convincing Jones’ Kate to reluctantly return to her old storm-chasing lifestyle alongside Powell’s roguish Tyler. The producers also showed off some of the film’s tornado scenes, revealing that Twisters utilizes real-life disaster footage, and explained why the sequel’s title pluralizes the original, a la Aliens. The pluralization doubles down on the original film’s most terrifying tornado scene.

A major behind-the-scenes reveal about the making of Twisters has proven that it’ll outdo the original movie in one key area: the tornadoes.

Twisters’ Twin Tornadoes Problem Calls Back To The Original’s Sisters Scene

In the original Twister, there’s a scene in which a tornado splits into two, which the characters refer to as “sisters.” These sister tornadoes fly at the storm chasers and double the danger they’re faced with. The CinemaCon footage from Twisters has revealed that the sequel is exploring a similar concept of tornadoes that split into two for double the trouble. In Twisters, they’re known as “twins.” These twin tornadoes call back to the sister tornadoes from the first film.

Twisters’ Twin Tornadoes Focus Is Great News For The Sequel’s Action

Glen Powell as Tyler Owens in Twisters

The use of twin tornadoes in Twisters is great news for the sequel’s action. It means that the intensity level is going to be high right from the outset. If the storm chasers’ primary objective is to chase tornadoes that split into multiples, then they’ll be tormented by twice as many twisters as last time. Just as James Cameron multiplied the threat of the xenomorph in Aliens, Chung is multiplying the threat of the tornadoes in Twisters, and it should make for an equally exhilarating viewing experience.

One of the things that made the original Twister such a captivating thrill-ride was that it always kept up the momentum of the action. There was never too much of a lull, because there was always a tornado around the corner – and in the movie’s most exciting moment, the twister had a sister. Based on the twin tornado sequence shown at CinemaCon, it seems as though Twisters is trying to double down on this aspect of the first movie even further.
