After suffering the recent flop of Rise of the Guardians, Dreamworks is looking to bounce back with three major animated releases in 2013, before How to Train Your Dragon 2 hits theatres in 2014 and Kung Fu Panda 3 in 2016.
The studio’s 2013 slate will include the prehistoric family film The Croods in March, the film adaptation of the cartoon Mr. Peabody and Sherman in November – and sandwiched in between will be Turbo, a film centering on the titular young snail (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), who yearns to escape his slow-paced existence.

After idolizing five-time Indianapolis 500 champion Guy Gagne, Turbo decides he wants to follow in his hero’s footsteps and become the Indy 500 champ himself. The trailer, which shows Turbo’s training routine, doesn’t reveal as much as the official synopsis below, which details exactly how he realizes his dream. Here is that synopsis, which was released by the studio earlier this year:
Turbo is a snail who dreams of being the greatest racer in the world, just like his hero, 5-time Indianapolis 500 champ, Guy Gagne. His obsession with speed and all things fast has made him an oddity and outsider in the slow and cautious snail community, and a constant embarrassment to his careful older brother, Chet. Turbo desperately wishes he could escape the slow-paced life he’s living. As luck would have it, he gets that chance one fateful day after a freak accident when he suddenly finds himself vested with the power of incredible speed.
Turbo embarks on an extraordinary journey to achieve the impossible: racing against the best that IndyCar has to offer. Turbo is the ultimate underdog who achieves the impossible by refusing to let his limitations get in the way of his dreams.
Turbo is the classic underdog story with humor that will likely appeal to young children, but what’s in it for adult moviegoers? Hopefully, the script contains more inspired jokes that don’t all revolve around the idea of snails being fast. What will certainly add to the proceedings is the talented and diverse voice cast that, along with Reynolds, includes Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live), Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Micheal Pena (End of Watch), Michelle Rodriguez (Fast and Furious), Luis Guzman (Boogie Nights), Richard Jenkins (Killing Them Softly), Ken Jeong (The Hangover) and even the great Samuel L. Jackson.
You also have to give some credit to the trailer for using “Tick of the Clock” by The Chromatics, a track that appeared in the incredibly vibrant and dark Nicolas Winding Refn neo-noir film Drive, which we absolutely love. If first-time director David Soren sprinkles brilliant touches like that throughout Turbo, adult viewers will likely declare it a winner as well.
