Jodie Foster Is The 3rd Actor To Receive An Oscar Nomination While Starring In True Detective
Foster is the third True Detective star to receive an Oscar nomination while their season is airing on HBO, marking an interesting trend for the series. The announcement of the 2024 Oscar nominations revealed that Foster is up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Nyad. Foster played Bonnie Stoll in the 2023 film, serving as a coach to the titular athlete. Their connection runs deeper than that, allowing both Foster and Annette Bening to give standout performances.
McConaughey kicked off this trend by receiving an Academy Award nomination while True Detective season 1 was airing back in 2014. This was for his role as Ron Woodroof in the 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club. While none of True Detective season 2’s stars got Oscars attention, Mahershala Ali was also nominated for an Academy Award while season 3 was on. Ali’s nomination was for Best Supporting Actor in Green Book, during which he played Dr. Don Shirley. Although McConaughey and Ali both won Oscars for supporting roles, this likely won’t be the case for Foster, as she has steep competition in the category — and other nominees seem like stronger contenders. Other than Foster, the Best Supporting Actress nominees for 2024 include Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers, Emily Blunt for Oppenheimer, Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple, and America Ferrera for Barbie. Da’Vine Joy Randolph seems like the probable winner in the category, making Foster’s fight an uphill battle. Fortunately, her True Detective role could put her in the conversation for the Emmys.
