Transformers: The Movie Returning To Theaters For 35th Anniversary

The 1986 animated classic The Transformers: The Movie is set to return to theaters for its upcoming 35th anniversary. Originally released in August 1986, The Transformers: The Movie was the first big-screen adaptation of the Hasbro toy line which had begun airing its original television series in 1984. Featuring an all-star cast which included Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy and Eric Idle, the film also served as the last performance of screen legend Orson Welles who recorded the voice of Unicron just days before passing away.

While the film’s original theatrical release failed to garner much critical or commercial success, its successive release on home video quickly made it a fan favorite. Now, with the film’s 35th anniversary rapidly approaching, Comicbook.com is also reporting that Fathom Events are teaming up with Hasbro to bring it back to the big screen. A new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release is also planned as part of the celebrations. Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Events said the following about the film’s theatrical re-release:

Fathom is thrilled to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the release of THE TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE in partnership with Hasbro. It’s exciting to give the fans of this cult classic an opportunity to see this film on the big screen, the way it was meant to be seen.

In the years which followed The Transformers: The Movie’s original release, the franchise has made its way back to theaters numerous times via the live-action adaptations of Michael Bay and Travis Knight. Currently, a 7th film in the series, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, is also in production under the direction of Steven Caple Jr. Throughout all these live-action films, however, many fans of the original animated film still consider it as one of the best attempts at bringing Transformers to the big screen. There’s no doubt fans of The Transformers: The Movie will be eager to be able to head into local theaters and take a nostalgic journey back to a simpler time, one before Bay’s explosive-laden, CGI heavy take on the franchise.
