Transformers’ New Canon Officially Brings Back an Awesome ’86 Movie Villain

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Void Rivals #3The Energon Universe just brought back one of the Transformers franchise’s most obscure villains, and the cameo in Void Rivals #3 will delight fans of the 1986 animated movie.

Skybound Entertainment shocked the world when the Transformers’ Jetfire appeared at the end of the first issue of their newest title, Void Rivals. That surprise appearance wound up being the opening shot of the Energon Universe, an all-new shared continuity between Hasbro properties G.I. Joe, Transformers and new series Void Rivals. Created by Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici, Void Rivals tells the story of Darak and Solilia, two alien warriors from opposing factions in a bitter intergalactic war who are forced to work together after being stranded on a desolate moon.

Void Rivals Brings Back The Quintesson Prosecutor From Transformers: The Movie

Transformers’ New Canon Officially Brings Back an Awesome ’86 Movie Villain

Coming from the creative team of Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Matheus Lopes and Rus Wooten, Void Rivals #3 continues the story of Darak and Solila, who have managed to get off the moon they were stranded on only to then be picked up by a Skuxxoid, a mercenary race in the wider Transformers universe. Darak and Solila are able to fight him off and escape into his asteroid-shaped starship, where they come across various beings held in the cargo hold that the Skuxxoid plans to collect a bounty on. One of these prisoners asks for their help, so Darak and Solila agree to free him, whereupon it’s revealed to be a Quintesson Prosecutor, the distinctive robotic alien from 1986’s Transformers: The Movie, where staged trials were mockingly held for “criminals” on the planet Quintessa.

The Quintesson Prosecutor is a really cool design, and definitely continues the trend of Kirkman and co. pulling from the furthest reaches of the Transformers franchise in building up the new continuity. The planet Quintessa and its inhabitants the Quintessons are some of the more interesting elements in Transformers lore, essentially a corrupt planet of various robotic life-forms who will betray anyone as long as it is to their own advantage. It will be interesting to see if the Quintessons play a larger role in the Energon Universe going forward, but there are plenty of other corners of the Transformers franchise for Skybound to explore in future issues. Later in the issue, the Skuxxoid makes reference to Slizardo, a low-life mercenary/gambler who appeared in later episodes of the G1 cartoon, so it appears that nothing is off-limits for Kirkman and his Skybound collaborators.

Void Rivals Skuxxoid Deal

Ultimately, Darak and Solila decline the Quintesson’s offer of help, as the two are offered a ship by the Skuxxoid once he learns neither one has a bounty on their heads. However their story plays out from here, fans definitely won’t want to miss future issues of Void Rivals to see how the Energon Universe develops, and to see which piece of Transformers lore appears next.

Void Rivals #3 is on sale now from Skybound Entertainment.
