The upcoming Tomb Raider 2, a sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider movie, may start filming next year. The Alicia Vikander-starring film two years ago brought Lara Croft to life for the first time in over a decade. Tomb Raider received mixed reviews, and did decent at the worldwide box office. At the very least, it did well enough to warrant a followup. Back in September 2019, Tomb Raider 2 was given a 2021 release date, alongside a director in Ben Wheatley (Free Fire).
The Tomb Raider series is a famous video game franchise. Lara Croft remains an icon in video game popular culture. One would find it extremely difficult to locate a greatest video game heroine list with her absent. In 2001, the character was brought to life by Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The actress returned for a sequel, although a third film was never made. In 2013, Square Enix rebooted the Tomb Raider games with a new action-adventure title and look for Lara. The 2018 Tomb Raider film was based on the reboot, and starred Oscar-winning actress Vikander. It has been a little while since fans last heard news on the sequel.
In an interview on Good Morning America, Vikander briefly discussed what’s going on with the sequel to Tomb Raider. The actress is hoping the studio will begin filming in 2021.
“The plan was for us to start making one this year, of course due to the [pandemic] situation, that’s now very different. We’re still in discussions about it, so I hope we can probably get to it next year.”
Although disappointing there’s no concrete word on when Tomb Raider 2 is moving full steam ahead, it’s understandable. It’s also encouraging Vikander hopes to start filming next year. Of course, while the film was scheduled to release in March 2021, that likely isn’t the case anymore, as filming has yet to begin. Fans will have to wait and see when the sequel is ready to release, and what new release date it will be given.
There is no official word on the storyline for Tomb Raider 2. The ending to the 2018 film had Lara realize part of her father’s company was aligned with Trinity, so the sequel will presumably continue her fight against the evil group. It remains to be seen what the film can do to improve on the lukewarm reception of the first, but perhaps a big emphasis on adventure in a unique setting will grab viewers, along with supernatural elements. The third title in the rebooted game series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, featured the legendary city of Paititi. The locale was visually appealing. If Tomb Raider 2 has an engaging setting, a grand sense of adventure and a compelling script, the film should see more positive reception than its predecessor.
