Tom King To Relaunch Wonder Woman, Making Diana An American Outlaw

With a new creative team and a new relaunch, Wonder Woman is about to enter a brand new era as part of the “Dawn of DC” initiative, as superstar creators Tom King and Daniel Sampere are turning the Amazon into an outlaw in Wonder Woman #1 this July.

The “Dawn of DC” storytelling initiative continues this July with the launch of Wonder Woman #1 by Tom King and Daniel Sampere. After the over-sized 800th issue of Wonder Woman, which will feature the conclusion to the “Whatever Happened to the Warrior of Truth?” storyline from writers Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad, Wonder Woman and the Amazons will face an unheard-of and thrilling challenge in this new #1 for the long-running title.

In September, Wonder Woman #1 will feature the new creative team of Eisner-winning writer Tom King and artist Daniel Sampere. After a mysterious Amazonian is accused of mass murder, the U.S. Congress passes The Amazon Safety Act, barring all Amazons from American soil. To carry out its new law, the government sets up the Amazon Extradition Entity (AXE) task force to remove those who don’t comply by any means necessary. In her search for the truth behind the killing, Wonder Woman now finds herself an outlaw in the world she once swore to protect. The action-packed Wonder Woman #1 will be available at local comic shops in July, and Wonder Woman #800 features a prelude to the story.

Wonder Woman’s New Creative Team Is a Fresh Start for the Character

With the announcement of a new Wonder Woman title and team—in addition to a slew of other new books and creative teams—DC is continuing its promise to refresh its entire line in 2023 with the “Dawn of DC” storytelling initiative. Until now, the narrative heart of that initiative has been in Metropolis with Superman and the Super-Family, but it was only a matter of time until Wonder Woman and the Amazons got their chance to shine. Themyscira has been in a state of upheaval in recent months as the Amazons navigated a murder investigation, the coronation of Queen Nubia, the upcoming Lazarus Planet: Revenge of the Gods miniseries, and more.

For better or for worse, the main Wonder Woman title has gotten lost among the other major happenings in Wonder Woman’s corner of the DC Universe, and it was already high time for a fresh creative perspective on Diana and her Amazon sisters. With the historic title soon to be in the hands of Eisner award-winning writer Tom King and Dark Crisis artist Daniel Sampere, Wonder Woman will be getting a completely new and compelling role as an American outlaw. Though Diana will perhaps always be best known as a Themysciran ambassador, its the tension between that previous (and beloved) role and her new outlaw status quo that gives this take on Wonder Woman its punch.

But it only makes sense that Wonder Woman would put herself at odds with the U.S. government if it meant she was still on the side of the truth. As she searches for the real answer behind this “mass murder,” Diana will likely keep pitching herself against all the right kinds of people. Even as an outlaw, Wonder Woman will always be Earth’s greatest champion.
