Tom Cruise’s Next Long-Delayed Sequel Needs To Be His Priority Over Top Gun 3

Tom Cruise’s Next Long-Delayed Sequel Needs To Be His Priority Over Top Gun 3

Tom Cruise continues to show his star power, but instead of focusing on a third Top Gun movie, his priority should be a long-delayed sequel to a sci-fi movie from 2014. Tom Cruise’s acting career began in the 1980s, with his big break arriving in the comedy film Risky Business in 1982. Cruise quickly became one of the most popular actors of the 1980s, and while he took part in different projects throughout the decade, the biggest one was Tony Scott’s Top Gun. The success of Top Gun established Cruise as one of the biggest stars of the decade and one of the most profitable actors, a reputation he has maintained for years.

Although Cruise has gone through a couple of rough patches in his career, he has remained one of the industry’s most popular actors thanks to the franchise Mission: Impossible. Cruise’s career got another boost in 2022 with the release of Top Gun: Maverick, one of the highest-grossing movies of 2022 as well as a critical success. Of course, speculation about a third Top Gun movie quickly began, but as interesting as Maverick’s return would be, Cruise’s priority should be a long-delayed but never-forgotten sequel to a successful sci-fi movie.

Although Top Gun and Mission Impossible show how big of a star Tom Cruise is, the best proof is, actually, in one failed movie franchise.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 (aka Live, Die, Repeat & Repeat) Is More Exciting Than Top Gun 3

In 2014, the sci-fi action movie Edge of Tomorrow was released, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Directed by Doug Liman and based on the 2004 Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill, by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, Edge of Tomorrow takes viewers to a future where most of Europe is taken over by an alien race called “Mimics”. Major William Cage (Cruise) is forced to join a landing operation against the Mimics, but after a mortal encounter, he finds himself in a time loop that he uses to find a way to defeat the Mimics. Edge of Tomorrow was a critical and commercial success, but a sequel has been delayed for too long.

Although Edge of Tomorrow didn’t have an open ending, it did leave the door open for a sequel, as Cage has now found his real place and mission in this chaotic, futuristic world. While another Top Gun movie would be interesting and could continue the success of the first movies, the Edge of Tomorrow sequel has been in development for too long, and the idea of it finally happening overshadows the interest in Top Gun 3. Of course, that’s not to say Top Gun 3 wouldn’t be exciting, but focusing on making Edge of Tomorrow 2 happen after so many delays (reportedly linked to Cruise’s busy schedule) should be Cruise’s priority.

What’s Going On With Edge Of Tomorrow 2?

Edge Of Tomorrow 2 has come across different obstacles that have kept it in development for years. Doug Liman signed in 2016 to return as director, and even teased that Edge Of Tomorrow 2 would “revolutionize how people make sequels” and it’s “a sequel that’s a prequel” (via Collider). In 2017, Liman revealed the sequel would be titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat, but even though it seemed to be on its way to starting production soon, Blunt and Cruise’s schedules got in the way.

In August 2023, Blunt shared that Cruise’s busy schedule was delaying the project, but that she was ready. A TV series spinoff of Edge Of Tomorrow was in development at Warner Bros in early 2022 with the purpose of releasing it on HBO Max, but the project is now on hold. The future of Edge Of Tomorrow 2 is uncertain, but in order to finally make it happen, Tom Cruise has to shift his focus from Top Gun to Edge Of Tomorrow.
