Superheroes have overtaken the box office as one of the most successful genres, but recently that success has begun to dwindle a bit with fans criticizing the formulaic stories and unoriginal approach to the genre.
During an exclusive interview with Todd McFarlane, he discussed how the Spawn movie can bring something new to the superhero genre. He explained how Spawn stands out from other superheroes. McFarlane also shared why this might be the perfect time for Spawn, especially with the character being relatively unknown among the public. Check out McFarlane’s full quote below:
Todd McFarlane: Look, right now, we’re seeing potentially a little bit of a lull in the formula of superhero movies. And it might just be good timing… Everybody wants to know, “How do you tweak the formula that’s getting maybe a little soft?” And you need the right character to be able to try something different. I think Spawn’s built for that. He’s not Superman, who’s perfect, and you can’t then go, “Hey, let’s try this or this.” His box isn’t that big, per se. Spawn is still relatively unknown outside the bubble of Geekdom. And to make a movie successful, you’re going to have to sell it to a lot of people who don’t know or have never read a single comic book before.
Fingers crossed. We all have high hopes to do something at a time that’s slightly different; a time when people are maybe looking for something slightly different. Who knows? We might be done at the right place, at the right time – and that could help. I don’t know. We don’t control all of it. Obviously, you need the studios and everything to get in, but that’s the recipe we’re all looking for right now.
Spawn Can Bring A New Type Of Super Powered Leading Character To The Box Office
One aspect of Spawn that immediately sets him apart from many superheroes is that he is an anti-hero. A soldier turned spy turned Hellspawn his origin is one of violence and blood. After being betrayed by both his country and his friend, he makes a deal with the devil to be brought back, but his return does not include his memories. Spawn is perfectly posed to explore an origin story in a way that breaks the usual formulaic approach.
Spawn Reboot Nearing “Make Or Break” Development Stage, Says Director
The Spawn reboot is nearing the “make or break” point of its development, says director Todd McFarlane, who has outside investors waiting.
Spawn could show his life as Al Simons through broken snippets in flashbacks, with the audience learning with him about his past. Spawn is a killer who fights street criminals before finding more terrifying foes to face off against. By delving into the darker and, to a degree, more selfish side of heroism, Spawn can set itself apart from other superhero movies and bring something new to the genre.
Fans are hopeful for the future, with the X-Men and Fantastic Four coming to the MCU and James Gunn taking over the DC Universe. However, Spawn could bring something wholly unique, exploring elements of horror and bringing an edge to the genre that has thus far been missing.
