TMNT: [SPOILER] Sacrificed Himself to Save the Last Ronin

Warning! Spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin #3 below!

In the latest issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, the fate of Leonardo and Casey Jones has been revealed. In a shocking scene, the pair chose to fight against legions of Baxter Stockman’s robot bugs, all so Michelangelo and April O’Neil would have a chance to escape the Foot Clan. Little did they know, the fight would be the end of the line for both heroes.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin tells the story of the last surviving Turtle, Michelangelo. Mikey became the Last Ronin after watching his entire family be killed. He mastered martial arts to take down the Foot Clan once and for all. However, turning into the ultimate warrior in the dark future has also come with its difficulties, as he’s struggled greatly after losing his brothers – as he speaks to their ghosts. After trying to end his own life, he was discovered by Casey Jones Jr., who reunited him with April O’Neil. Together, the trio are going after Oroku Hiroto, as the Last Ronin plans on getting revenge for his fallen brothers.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin #3 by  Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, Esau Escorza, Isaac Escorza, and Ben Bishop, the story flashes back to a mission amidst peace attempts with the Foot Clan. The attempted truce doesn’t last long, as the group is attacked by Baxter Stockman, who tries to capture Fugatoid. Casey and Leo are swarmed by Stockman’s robot minions and tell Mikey and April to escape, so Donatello and Splinter can be told about the Foot Can’s betrayal. After Fugatoid tells Stockman he’ll self-destruct before allowing him to take him, the mad scientist decides to self-destruct his own robots – killing Leo and Casey.

Further flashbacks reveal April survived the attack but lost her husband, friends, home, and an arm and a leg – all while she learned she was pregnant. Meanwhile, Michelangelo emerged from the rubble and immediately went to Japan, hoping to reach Donnie and Master Splinter.

Leonardo and Casey Jones ultimately sacrificed themselves to ensure April and Michelangelo could escape and relay the message about the Foot Clan’s attack to Master Splinter. Just like Rafael’s fiery death, the pair’s explosive demise is incredibly tragic. In the end, the Foot Clan couldn’t be trusted and it ultimately cost the Turtles greatly.
