TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge Dimension Shellshock DLC – Release Date, Price, New Characters

A DLC expansion for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, titled Dimension Shellshock is on the way, and will bring a new game mode, playable characters, and more. The pixel art beat-em-up game originally released on all major gaming platforms in 2022, eventually making its way to mobile devices in early 2023 as well. Very well received upon release, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge pays homage to the classic arcade games featuring the iconic shelled heroes, and the Dimension Shellshock DLC will only serve to broaden the experience.

Shredder’s Revenge has a relatively short Story Mode, but a large cast of playable characters, challenges to complete in every episode, and both local and online multiplayer help boost replayability. Dimension Shellshock seems to be a moderately sized expansion for the moderately sized Shredder’s Revenge, delivering new content but not expanding the game’s story. The Dimension Shellshock DLC will also be accompanied by the game’s second free content update.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge Dimension Shellshock DLC – Release Date, Price, New Characters

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge – Dimension Shellshock will be released on August 31, 2023 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. This comes more than a year after the game’s initial release in June 2022. Developer Tribute Games and publisher Dotemu will also release a new free update for Shredder’s Revenge alongside the DLC. This is the second free update to Shredder’s Revenge, following one last December which brought the welcome Custom Game options to the title.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge – Dimension Shellshock Price

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge – Dimension Shellshock will cost $7.99 USD. The relatively low price tracks with the full game’s retail price, which is well below the common $60 or $70 price tags for new games. At the time of writing, Shredder’s Revenge is also available through both Xbox Game Pass and the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalogs, lowering the barrier of entry if the reveal of Dimension Shellshock has piqued interest.

Dimension Shellshock Adds Two New Characters To Shredder’s Revenge

All nine playable character sprites from Shredder's Revenge, including the two newest coming in the Dimension Shellshock DLC, Karai and Miyamoto Usagi, who are on the far right of the image. Each sprite has its own distinctly colored vertical column extending from the top to the bottom of the image.

Two new playable characters will be added to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge via the Dimension Shellshock DLC: Karai and Miyamoto Usagi. Karai is newly revealed in a new Dimension Shellshock trailer uploaded to Dotemu’s YouTube channel, and alongside Usagi will join the TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge playable character roster comprised of Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo, April O’Neil, Master Splinter, and Casey Jones. Both new Dimension Shellshock characters will be usable throughout the game’s modes, not just the new one added through the DLC.

Karai is a fan-favorite character who has long appeared in TMNT comics and adaptions. Usually, she is a high-ranking member of the Foot Clan, frequently second-in-command to Shredder, and often related to him either biologically or adoptively. With various arcs throughout the TMNT comics, TV shows, and movies, Karai often has a fraught relationship with the Turtles – sometimes at odds under Shredder’s command, or other times an ally after having taken control of the Foot Clan herself. Though there appears to be no narrative justification for Karai’s appearance in Dimension Shellshock, as a playable character she’s clearly fighting alongside the Turtles.

The other new character in the TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge – Dimension Shellshock DLC, Miyamoto Usagi, actually hails from a separate comic series, Usagi Yojimbo. Usagi is the perfect character for Shredder’s Revenge to add, though, having shared numerous crossovers with the Turtles dating back to the 1980s. Taking heavy inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s legendary samurai film, Yojimbo, and real-life swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, Usagi is an anthropomorphized rabbit ronin. Usagi appears to heavily utilize his katana in his moveset in the Shredder’s Revenge DLC.

New Survival Game Mode In Dimension Shellshock DLC

Alongside the two new characters, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge – Dimension Shellshock is adding a new game mode: Survival. First revealed in its own Shredder’s Revenge DLC trailer (also via Dotemu on YouTube), Survival will take players through an inter-dimensional gauntlet where they’ll fight through waves of enemies that will presumably get progressively more difficult. Survival mode will have its own progression system based on collecting crystals, which in turn unlock power-ups like additional lives, ninja power bars, extra health, and Radical Mode.

Dimension Shellshock‘s new Survival mode will force players to make choices frequently, though. At the end of a round, much like the progression seen in many roguelike games, there will be a choice between two rewards. For example, players might be given the option of taking crystals for character upgrades, or perks to boost capabilities in the coming rounds. One perk shown in the trailer is called Healthy Living, and will grant additional health at the beginning of each wave for six rounds, but prohibits the use of Party Pizza in the meantime.

Another wrinkle to the Survival mode gameplay in the TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge DLC is the ability to mutate into other characters. More specifically, players will be able to take on the form of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ most notorious foes, including Bebop and Rocksteady, the mutant warthog and rhinoceros, and even the infamous Shredder. The mutations in Dimension Shellshock seem to result in more powerful attacks, and perhaps better defensive capabilities.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge DLC & Free Update New Content

Pixelated TMNT art arranged to look like black and white comic book panels with certain details, like the Turtles' headbands and a pizza, colorized. Two fill a majority of the screen at an angle. On the left, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Usagi are in a sewer. On the right, Leonardo, Raphael, and Karai are on a basketball court.

Those who purchase the TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge DLC won’t be the only ones treated to new content, however. Along with Dimension Shellshock, a second free content update is releasing for Shredder’s Revenge; this one, however, is not as robust as the previous, which brought Custom Game settings. This second free content update for Shredder’s Revenge will simply bring more color palette swaps to the base game’s character roster.

The Dimension Shellshock DLC’s new content, though, is not comprised of just the new Survival game mode and playable characters. The TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge DLC will introduce brand-new music tracks from the game’s composer, Tee Lopes, and alternate color schemes for the two new fighters, Karai and Miyamoto Usagi. All told, the Dimension Shellshock DLC is a compact expansion to match the relatively small scope of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. It’ll bring a new game mode and new characters, among other things, for a fairly reasonable price.
