Titans Season 4 Admits How Messy Starfire’s Story Has Been

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Titans Season 4 episodes 1 & 2

It seems HBO’s Titans is well aware that Starfire has narratively been all over the place since the series’ first season. Played by Anna Diop, the Princess of Tamaran known as Koriand’r came to Earth having no memory of who she truly was. After recovering from her amnesia, the character has had multiple “destinies” which have all demanded her focus throughout the series, something she and Nightwing’s Dick Grayson joke about in the opening scene of Titans season 4’s premiere.

Compared to her fellow Titans, Starfire hasn’t had the same kind of singular motivation or personal drive that the others do. Beast Boy and Raven have their respective battles controlling and harnessing their powers. Superboy is on a quest for identity as the half-human, half-Kryptonian clone of Superman and Lex Luthor. Dick Grayson has been on a journey of becoming a leader while escaping the shadow of Batman as Nightwing. Tim Drake is trying to be a worthy member of the Titans and the Robin mantle. When it comes to Kory, her multiple callings have basically changed each season which has created some viewer whiplash. However, it will be interesting to see what’s in store for Kory now that Titans has made fun of her multiple arcs at the beginning of season 4.

As Nightwing recounts to Starfire off the top of his head, Kory’s original reason for coming to Earth in Titans season 1 was to kill Rachel who had been prophesied as a cosmic destroyer thanks to Raven’s evil demon father Trigon. Then, the reveal that Starfire’s sister Blackfire had forcibly taken over Tamaran pulled at her sense of duty to return home and reclaim the throne in season 2. However, Titans season 3 not only saw Starfire and the Titans trying to save Gotham, but Blackfire’s own arrival to Earth saw Kory facing her sister with the two of them eventually reconciling their differences. In the aftermath, Kory chose to stay on Earth while Blackfire returned to rule Tamaran with Starfire’s blessing.

After all of those destinies with plenty of brawls in between alongside the Titans, it makes perfect sense that Kory is simply looking forward to living her life. She feels as though she’s finally able to be her own person without some sort of greater calling or responsibility demanding her attention. However, that doesn’t mean she’s not going to have a narrative in Titans season 4.

What’s Starfire’s Story In Titans Season 4?

Combined with the reveal that Starfire’s original fire powers secretly belonged to her sister, Blackfire reabsorbed the power when Kory attempted to heal her following a battle near the end of Titans season 3. However, Kory soon discovered her ability to use a new and mysterious blue-light power instead. She’s also had several visions such as the ones that led her to Blackfire’s imprisonment on Earth in the first place.

Now, the first two episodes of Titans season 4 have confirmed that Kory will be looking into where these powers and visions came from, especially after the reveal that she was being investigated in connection with Lex Luthor’s explorations into the occult as a means to prevent his imminent death. With STAR Labs confirming Kory is now more powerful than she ever was before, she’s also the best chance the Titans have against the dark magic of Mother Mayhem and the Church of Blood. While it could very well lead to a brand new “destiny” for Starfire in HBO’s Titans, perhaps this is the one she’ll finally stick with (for viewers’ sakes).
