Titans: Every Trophy Batman Collected From His Villains

Titans: Every Trophy Batman Collected From His Villains

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Titans season 3, episode 5

In Titans episode 5, “Lazarus,” Jason Todd (Curran Walters) takes a good look at the trophies Batman has kept from his past villains. The show already gave viewers a glimpse of some of Bruce Wayne’s (Iain Glen) trophies before in episode 1, “Barbara Gordon,” as Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) walks through the Batcave. Between the two scenes, Titans has confirmed a surprisingly large number of Batman’s villains as having been defeated in this universe.

Functioning as a flashback, Titans episode 5 serves to tell the story of how Jason Todd went from Robin to Red Hood. A key part of this narrative is Red Hood’s partnership with Scarecrow, his temporary demise at the hands of Joker, and his resurrection through the use of a remaining Lazarus Pit left behind by Ra’s Al Ghul. Batman’s villains play a major role in the story that Titans season 3 is telling, so it comes as no surprise that the show is using their trinkets to remind viewers of the characters without having to show them on screen.

Titans shows a Batman at the end of his career, finally hanging up the cowl (for now at least) at the end of season 3, episode 1. As he isn’t the most verbose character in Titans, not even having a speaking role in the first season, his story has to be told more visually. His Batcave’s adornments highlight his character’s loneliness, as his trophies have slowly become his only companions. However, they also help to show that this Bruce Wayne is at the end of his story and has done it all already. It is time for someone else to take up the role. Yet, for longtime Batman fans, the cave is stacked full of easter eggs.

T-Rex Hologram

Titans: Every Trophy Batman Collected From His Villains

While it might seem ridiculous at first glance, the presence of a T-Rex in Batman’s hideout has a long-standing tradition. In “Dinosaur Island,” a 1946 comic, Batman and Robin visit a theme-park-style attraction where people can pay to hunt giant robotic dinosaurs. A criminal turns all the dinosaurs against the duo, but they fight their way free, and the park’s owner gifts Batman one of the robots as a thank you. The dinosaur has been a staple of the Batcave ever since. For Titan’s gritty 2021 aesthetic, the robot itself has been replaced with a hologram that fits the sleek style of the new Batcave.

Penny Hologram

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Giant Coin

The giant coin in Bruce Wayne’s collection is sometimes mistaken for Two-Face’s silver dollar. However, it is actually a relic of a different villain: Penny Plunderer, real name Joseph Coyne. In his first appearance in “World’s Finest” #30 in 1947, Penny Plunderer attempts to steal the giant penny from a coin exhibition but his theft was thwarted by Batman. It was never explained how the coin then came to be in Batman’s possession, but it has been a standard trophy alongside the T-Rex ever since. Like the T-Rex, Titans has replaced the physical coin with a holographic representation instead.

Joker Playing Cards

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Joker Calling Cards

Episode 1 of Titans season 3 gives a glimpse of a giant playing card (a joker, of course) which has been a regular fixture in representations of the Batcave. The item was originally in some of Joker’s lairs and later used as part of one of his schemes before Batman claimed it as his own memento. Episode 5 shows that within his secure vault, Batman also has a display of three regular-sized jokers, one of which seems ominously stained with blood, presumably calling cards left by Joker and collected by the Bat.

Harley’s Hammer

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Harley Quinn Mallet Hammer

In the center of the shot of Dick Grayson’s first season 3 visit to the Batcave is an oversized carnival mallet that undeniably once belonged to Harley Quinn. While Quinn is adept with many weapons, the mallet became her icon tool for a long time, particularly in Batman: The Animated Series where the character first appeared. Its presence here confirms Harley’s existence in this timeline, but Harley Quinn’s lack of apparent response to Joker’s demise suggests that one way or another she is no longer around.

Penguin’s Umbrella

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Penguin Umbrella

To the far left of the Titans season 3, episode 1 shot, next to the archway, is hanging an umbrella that most likely belonged to one of Batman’s most infamous villains: Penguin, also known as Oswald Cobblepot. Interestingly, this umbrella uses a black and white spiral on the top. While usually a concealment for more traditional weaponry, this design originally appeared in the 1960s TV series where he used it to hypnotize people but then resurfaced alongside Danny Devito’s portrayal of the character in Batman Returns, in which the spiral was primarily used to cause discomfort.

Mad Hatter’s Hat

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Mad Hatter Hat

Jervis Tetch, the Mad Hatter, is one of a collection of Batman’s villains that are themed after Alice in Wonderland characters. The original character is based on Lewis Caroll’s book rather than the Disney adaptation, given that he debuted in DC in 1948 and the Disney movie was not released until 1951. He has become a darker character over the years with his crimes extending beyond his obsession with hats. His iconic hat can be seen on a central plinth in the episode 1 shot of the Batcave.

Scarface Puppet

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Scarface Puppet

The first item shown in Batman’s vault in Titans season 3, episode 5 is the Scarface Puppet. Scarface was first created in Blackgate Prison and had a symbiotic relationship with the ventriloquist, Arnold Wesker, as he rose to become one of the most powerful mob bosses in Gotham. It has always been a little unclear whether Scarface is in fact sentient, or merely a vessel for the projection of a split personality by Wesker. Some iterations show the doll moving on his own, so it is probably best that Batman has him sealed away so securely.

Two-Face’s Silver Dollar

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Harvey Dent Two-Face Coin

This silver dollar comes from one of Batman’s most well-known villains: ex-district attorney Harvey Dent turned criminal mastermind Two-Face. In most origins of the character, Dent would play with a trick silver dollar which had a head on both sides. When Sal Maroni burnt half his body with acid the coin was damaged on one side and he used it to make decisions in life and death situations, fueled by his obsession with duality.

Ra’s Al Ghul’s Sword

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Ras Al Ghul Sword

By the end of episode 5, Ra’s Al Ghul has been name-dropped twice in Titans season 3 and become a key role. Having used the Lazarus Pits to live an unnaturally extended life over hundreds of years, the Titans confirm that he is currently dead. However, that apparently doesn’t stop Scarecrow from using one of his remaining pits to resurrect Jason Todd. His sword here is one more reminder of the importance of the head of the League of Assassins to this narrative, despite his absence.

Catwoman’s Goggles, Whip, and Bike

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Catwoman Goggles

This iteration of Bruce Wayne seems particularly obsessed with Catwoman (Selina Kyle) as she is one of the few villains he has multiple trophies from. Her motorbike is visible to the left of the Batcave in the first episode of Titans season 3, and her goggles and whip are shown in episode 5. Batman and Catwoman have often had romantic relationships despite their differing moral compasses, with the two effectively getting married in one comic storyline. There seems to be a history in the Titans timeline as well as when Bruce thinks Jason has a new girlfriend he warns him “if this new girl likes cats… run.”

Scarecrow’s Mask and Toxin

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Scarecrow Mask

Amongst all of the trophies of past villains, Scarecrow’s (Vincent Kartheiser) mask and fear toxin are the most directly relevant to Titans’ season 3 plot. Jason uses his possession of the serum to prove himself to Scarecrow, also known as Jonathan Crane. As well as giving him a terrifying appearance, the mask protects Crane from his own toxin, while the toxin itself will make people live out their worst fears. Leslie Thompkins has already confirmed that the Titans Scarecrow has used this on his victims, and with him free from Arkham Asylum, his grand plans with Red Hood likely involved the use of the toxin once again.

Joe Chill’s Gun

Titans Batcave Easter Egg Joe Chill Gun

The gun used to kill Batman’s parents was first teased during Titans season 2, episode 1, “Trigon,” when Jason breaks it from its glass and uses it to shoot Dick Grayson in a Trigon-induced vision. It wasn’t clear whether Bruce Wayne really kept the gun on display in the Batcave, or whether it was merely part of the vision. However, while it is hard to make out, it appears to sit on a podium to the right of the shot in season 3, episode 1. Whether Jason Todd really kept Joe Chill’s gun loaded may still come up later in the season.

Robin’s Armor

Titans Batcave Jason Todd Robin Costume

Perhaps the saddest trophy in Bruce Wayne’s collection as shown in Titans is Jason Todd’s Robin armor. After Batman grounds his sidekick, the uniform is seen in a display case in the Batcave with Jason Todd claiming it before heading out to meet his fate at the hands of the Joker. In the wake of his death, Bruce is seen cleaning and replacing the armor in the case. Whether he means for the next Robin to wear the same armor is unclear, but if not then it becomes just a sad reminder of the man he called “son.

Titans releases new episodes every Thursday on HBO Max.
