Dune: Part Three now seems inevitable after a confident story reveal from Paul Atreides actor Timothée Chalamet. Based on the popular novel series by author Frank Herbert, Denis Villeneuve’s first Dune was released in 2021, and was met with positive reception from audiences and critics alike. The director is set to return to Arrakis early next year with his highly-anticipated sequel, with the potential for a third film already on the horizon.
Now, ahead of the Dune: Part Two release date, Chalamet teases in an interview with MTV that Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho will make his return in a prospective third movie.
Although Duncan seemingly dies during the events of the first film, the actor confirms that the threequel would take after the Dune Messiah and feature the character’s triumphant return. The confident nature of Chalamet’s comment certainly suggests that a third movie is likely. Check out Chalamet’s full comment below:
“Momoa will be back. Not in this one, but [in Dune Messiah]. Yeah, if you read the books… It’s so weird because they’re so secretive about the script and the trailer, but [the books] have been out there for 70 years.”
What’s Been Said About Dune 3 So Far
It must be said, firstly, that an official Dune: Part Three confirmation announcement has not yet been made. The second film was given the green light right around the time the first one released in October 2021, but it’s unclear if that same approach will be taken when the upcoming installment hits theaters. It seems more likely that executives at Legendary will wait to see how Dune: Part Two performs at the box office before giving the go-ahead to another sequel.
As for Villeneuve, he has expressed optimism that a third film, which he referred to as Dune Messiah, will eventually happen. The director revealed in a recent South Korean press conference (via TongTongCulture) that the script for the movie is “almost finished,” saying of making another sequel: “There’s a dream of making a third movie… it would make absolute sense to me.“
If Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three does get the green light, however, it sounds like audiences could be in for quite a long wait, with the director revealing that he may direct a different film before once again returning to Arrakis. While story details for a third film remain hard to come by, the director has previously teased that he would stick to the books, using the storyline to deconstruct the idea of Paul Atreides being a hero.
