Time Travel Adventure Old Skies Will Let You Visit the Past

Wadjet Eye Games has just unveiled its new game Old Skies, a point-and-click adventure that lets players travel through time and complete various missions. According to Dave Gilbert, founder of Wadjet Eye Games, Old Skies shares the same universe as previous Wadjet Eye games like Unavowed and the Blackwell mystery series.

Point-and-click adventure games are rare in the modern video game world, as advances in technology have allowed for more fluid action-oriented gameplay. But a strong narrative remains as important as ever, and many of the most renowned modern titles get praise for their engaging stories. Action games like God of War and Uncharted are renowned for their story beats. But even as these towering technical achievements take the gaming world by storm, developers the world over remember to pay homage to the industry’s simpler roots.

Today, Wadjet Eye Games released a new teaser trailer on its official YouTube page which shows off the 2-dimensional, point-and-click style gameplay reminiscent of other staples in the point-and-click genre. Old Skies will feature seven missions, each pertaining to a different era in history with time-based puzzles to solve. It will also have music by returning composer Thomas Regin and the largest professional voice cast that Wadjet Eye has ever used. Currently, Old Skies is in development for PC, Nintendo Switch, Mac, and Linux. Although no official release date has been set, players can try out a playable PC demo on June 13 in time for this year’s Steam Next Fest.

If Old Skies sounds familiar at all, that might be because it was the product of a game jam back in 2019. Dave Gilbert, who was the writer/programmer of the original version, uploaded Old Skies to Game Jolt under a pseudonym. It received positive reception, and ever since the studio has continued its development process with significant changes and expansions, such as switching the art style from the original 3D to a more stylized 2D format.

Wadjet Eye Games has become a staple in the point-and-click adventure style, with its games standing alongside giants such as Grim Fandango and the Monkey Island series. Old Skies promises to be a welcome addition to the lineup, along with other notable point-and-click adventures such as one based off the steamed hams bit from The Simpsons. While many games have moved away from this form of gameplay, Old Skies shows that the developers of Wadjet Eye Games plan to continue honing this classic style.
