“Time Is A Flat Circle”: True Detective Season 4 Ending’s Big Season 1 Reference Explained By Showrunner

Warning! Spoilers ahead for the True Detective: Night Country finale.

True Detective: Night Country showrunner Issa López explains the major season 1 callback in the season finale. HBO’s latest iteration of the hit crime drama series follows two detectives investigating a series of murders in Alaska. Creator Nic Pizzolatto didn’t write this new season, but the new episodes feature a number of references and callbacks to season 1. One big reference comes in the finale when scientist Clark says that “time is a flat circle,” something that Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle memorably says in season 1.

In a recent interview with THR breaking down the True Detective: Night Country finale, López explains that the utterance of Cohle’s “time is a flat circle” line is more than just fan service. According to the showrunner, it’s something woven into the fabric of the season. Check out her full comment below:

“I felt that if someone was going to drop that line, it had to be a scientist. Because that theory has to do with a lot of really advanced physics and the flow of time. I do believe that Clark [Owen McDonnell, who says the line] is crazy. But I also believe Annie’s always had these dreams about the spiral because she always inhabited that secret cave in a way, and was always going to find her fate. She’s always existed there, and she will always be there, and time is not linear in that way. It’s a flat circle.

“Nobody’s ever really gone. I do believe in that part of the philosophy. That it’s the ethos of this show. Cohle voices it in the first episode of season one. It’s not just in here for the fans, it’s done because I do believe that events turn around and come back and come back, and we’re trapped in it.”
