Tim Burton Characters Sorted Into Their Hogwarts Houses

Tim Burton Characters Sorted Into Their Hogwarts Houses

Over the course of his career, Tim Burton has inspired us all with his eccentric movies by ensuring audiences worldwide that it’s okay to be different. In fact, it’s preferable to be a bit of an oddball. All of Burton’s movies focus on misfit characters who simply want what we all desire- love. He has a habit of creating gothic characters who at first seem frightening, yet as we get to know them, we realize they are actually wonderful individuals who are simply misunderstood.

This is a common theme in the Potter universe as well, so it’s easy to draw parallels between Burton’s work as well as Rowling’s. With that being said, have you ever wondered which Hogwarts house each of Tim Burton’s most memorable characters would be sorted into? Look no further! Here are 10 of Tim Burton’s characters sorted into their Hogwarts houses.

SALLY – THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (HUFFLEPUFF)

Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas is so much more than a humanoid ragdoll. She is also the voice of reason throughout the film. Her moral compass is strong, and Santa Claus even admits that she’s the only person around who has any common sense. Despite the fact that she lives in this gothic frightful universe, she remains a sweetheart and her intentions are good.

Sure, she may be a bit of an attempted murderer (she tries to poison her capture/creator multiple times), but she is still a person (er-humanoid) with a heart of gold. If that doesn’t describe a Hufflepuff, we don’t know what does.

ALICE – ALICE IN WONDERLAND (RAVENCLAW)

Alice from Tim Burton’s remake of Alice in Wonderland is a great example of a Ravenclaw. Like most people from this house, she is fueled by curiosity, and sometimes her deep desire to question everything can interfere with her safety.

Alice is all about “wit” and “learning” so we think she would most certainly be cherished in this house. She feels most sane when she is around “weirdos” and eccentric personas, and who is more eccentric/weird than Ravenclaws?  Plus, we already know she rocks the color blue.

VICTOR – THE CORPSE BRIDE (HUFFLEPUFF)

Victor from Corpse Bride seems the best fit for the house of Hufflepuff. He is all about keeping things civil and calm, which is why he has such a difficult time at first going to the land of the dead. Despite the fact that he grows attached to Emily who is crazy about him, he remains loyal to Victoria (a woman he barely knows) throughout the entire film. He is steadfast when it comes to his commitments and he is a man of his word.

Yet despite the fact that he wants Victoria, he is still kind and considerate to Emily despite her being a corpse. He still appreciates her and wants Emily to see her value and worth. He messes up a lot, sure, but he’s still a good person who wants everyone to feel both seen and heard.

JACK SKELLINGTON – THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (SLYTHERIN)

Jack Skellington

Jack Skellington, AKA the king of the pumpkin patch, is filled with drive and ambition. These are some of the greatest traits that people who identify with the house of Slytherin possess. Slytherins get a bad reputation for being an evil house with no moral compass, yet this is simply not true.

There are a lot of Slytherins who want the best for all those around them, yet sometimes (like all humans) they end up making mistakes along the way. This is the case for Jack, who tries to change Halloween Town into Christmas Town. His intentions are good, yet when he ends up kidnapping Santa Claus, things go awry.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS – EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (HUFFLEPUFF)

Edward Scissorhands with Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder

Edward Scissorhands is one of the sweetest film characters out there, and certainly one of the gentlest souls out of all of  Tim Burton’s creations. He may have terrifying scissors for hands, but his heart is bursting with warmth.

All he wants is to lead a normal life while spending time with his one true love, Kim, but he can’t do this because everyone wants something from him and they refuse to leave the poor guy alone. He could easily use his scissor-hands to promote violence and power, but he instead uses them to give people eccentric haircuts. Total Hufflepuff move if you ask us.

EMILY – THE CORPSE BRIDE (GRYFFINDOR)

Emily the Corpse Bride smiles in the moonlight.

Emily from The Corpse Bride is praised for her selflessness. She may terrify mortals due to the fact that she’s a walking dead woman, but don’t let the maggots and bones fool you- This woman is a total sweetheart. This is a common theme in Tim Burton’s films, isn’t it? Monsters with a heart of gold seem to be the filmmaker’s favorite trope.

Even though Emily is in love with Victor, she knows he would be happier with Victoria. So instead of making him marry her, she lets him be happy even if it means she has to suffer. This is true bravery. Godric Gryffindor would be proud of the corpse bride for her noble actions.

THE MAD HATTER – ALICE IN WONDERLAND (GRYFFINDOR)

Johnny Depp’s version of The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland (2010) is the ultimate Gryffindor. It takes a great deal of courage to allow yourself to be so eccentric when most people try their best to simply fit in and blend with the rest of the crowd. The Mad Hatter takes the opposite approach. He couldn’t care less about how people perceive him.

He just wants to be able to live in a world where he can properly express himself. Famously, the movie states that all the best people are “mad.” All the best people are full of creativity, imagination, and utter fearlessness that allows them to be their authentic selves. This fearlessness is encouraged by the house of Gryffindor which stands for bravery more than anything else.

BEETLEJUICE – BEETLEJUICE (SLYTHERIN)

Beetlejuice standing and grinning in a dark room with his striped suit on.

So it turns out, not all of Tim Burton’s monsters possess a heart of gold. Beetlejuice is one of the rare examples of a Burton villain who has bad intentions. Beetlejuice likes to spend his days making people’s lives miserable by pulling elaborate pranks on the innocent while simultaneously invading their personal space. He doesn’t consider the feelings of others or the toll his actions have on his poor victims.

While Burton’s other monsters end up making big sacrifices in order to ensure the safety and happiness of others, Beetlejuice refuses to give anything up for the sake of others. He has all the worst traits of House Slytherin.

KIM – EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (RAVENCLAW)

Kim from Edward Scissorhands seems to fit best with the house of Ravenclaw. Ravenclaws are known for their proud individualism and they’re great at being able to come to their own conclusions and form their own opinions regardless of what others may think.

Kim is able to see the beauty and kindness in Edward, even though everyone else ends up believing he’s malicious. She has a ton of emotional intelligence, which is something Ravenclaws admire greatly.

LYDIA DEETZ – BEETLEJUICE (RAVENCLAW)

And finally, we have another Burton character played by Winona Ryder who also fits best in Ravenclaw. Lydia Deetz may seem gothic and dark, but she is secretly the sweetest person you will ever come across. Her character is smart, creative, and wildly artistic. She loves writing and taking photographs brought on by the beauty of nature.

Ravenclaws are arguably the most artistic out of all four Hogwarts houses, so we think she would fit best in Rowena Ravenclaw’s house. Who knows? Maybe she can become best friends with Luna Lovegood.
