TikTok Wrapped 2023: This Tool Reveals Your Stats (& Roasts Your Life)

TikTok users can now generate their activity stats in the style of Spotify Wrapped using an unofficial tool that analyzes their account’s data — but it pulls no punches when telling users how much time they’ve spent on the app. Spotify Wrapped and its many clones reliably go viral around the end-of-year holidays as they offer users a cleverly packaged, ultra-shareable recap of their year. They can be pretty illuminating, too, revealing how one’s listening or watching habits align with what’s going on in their life at a particular moment.

The Wrapped for TikTok tool created by developer Bennett Hollstein follows that popular design, showing users how much time they’ve spent on TikTok in minutes and days, how many videos they’ve watched, their most used emojis, and more. It presents these alongside not-so-subtly judgmental quips that are making some users take a hard look at their life choices, like, “In that time, you could’ve written a novel… but you didn’t.” The tool is free to use and even includes a Spotify embed so users can have a soundtrack to go with their TikTok year-in-review.

Users will need to download their data from TikTok in order to use the tool, and it has to be in the ‘JSON – Machine-readable file’ format. To find this, TikTok users should head to their profile and tap the menu at the top right, followed by ‘Settings and privacy.’ From there, go to ‘Account’ > ‘Download your data,’ then select the JSON option under the ‘Request data’ tab. Then, it’s a waiting game while TikTok pulls the report. For those who use the app a lot and have had it for years, this could take a while.

Once it’s ready, the JSON file will be available in the ‘Download data’ tab of that same menu. With the data in hand (in a ZIP file), users can then head back to the Wrapped for TikTok site and click ‘I have my TikTok data export, let’s go!’ Upload the file, and the Wrapped report will be ready shortly after. If users also want to have Spotify play along with their TikTok Wrapped, they just need to make sure they’re logged into Spotify in the browser they’re currently using.

The report will be based on the TikTok user’s past 6-12 months of activity. Wrapped for TikTok’s creator says the tool does not have access to users’ full login information, and that their data is not sent to an external server. The full, open-source code is also available on GitHub for anyone to comb through. It’s all in good fun — but be prepared, the truth (about your TikTok screen time) sometimes hurts.
