TikTok Won On Christmas Day

TikTok was reportedly the most downloaded app globally on Christmas day 2021, while Oculus came in at number one in the U.S. TikTok remains one of the most popular apps among teens and young people the world over despite all the controversies it has attracted over the years. It routinely tops the charts as one of the most downloaded apps globally. Earlier this month, a Sensor Tower report revealed that it was the most successful app globally this year regarding consumer spending, ahead of YouTube, Tinder and Disney+.

Such is the popularity of TikTok that a recent report even suggested that it overtook Google this year to become the domain with the most recorded web activity. The report came from content delivery network Cloudflare, which claimed that TikTok.com saw more traffic than Google.com in the last few months of 2021, placing it at number one globally. Facebook came in at number three, just after Google. By comparison, in 2020, Google and Facebook came in numbers one and two, while TikTok finished at number seven.

The latest report on TikTok’s increasing popularity comes from the mobile data and analytics platform App Annie, claiming that the ByteDance-owned app was the most downloaded mobile application globally on Christmas 2021. The list includes all the usual suspects, including Instagram and Facebook at numbers two and three, respectively. The top-ten list is rounded out by WhatsApp Messenger, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Shopee, Spotify and Capcut (Cut Screen) in that order.

For those unaware, the Oculus app is used to manage the Oculus Virtual Reality headsets and is available on both Android and iOS. YouTube came in at number two, while Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Disney+, Facebook Messenger, Netflix and Spotify rounded out the top ten. In the U.K., the National Health Service’s NHS app was the most downloaded, followed by TikTok at number two. WhatsApp, Snapchat, Amazon Alexa, YouTube, Spotify, Facebook, Netflix and Amazon also made their way into the top ten.

In terms of consumer spending on Christmas 2021, TikTok once again topped the charts globally, while HBO Max and Disney+ ranked number one in the U.S. and the U.K., respectively. Globally, the other apps that topped the consumer spending charts include YouTube, Tinder, Disney+, HBO Max, Google One, Tencent Video, Piccoma, Veve and Pandora Music.
