TikTok Rotoscope: What Is The Effect & How Do You Use It?

TikTok Rotoscope: What Is The Effect & How Do You Use It?

TikTok is home to constantly changing trends/challenges, and as of April 2022, the popular ‘Rotoscope’ effect is the latest viral thing to take over the app. Whether you open the app multiple times per day or only check in on it every now and then, it’s impossible to ignore TikTok these days. More users are joining, new trends are popping up, and conversations about TikTok often pour over into apps like Twitter and Instagram.

For many TikTok users, one of the app’s greatest strengths is its huge library of video filters and effects. With just a couple of taps, TikTok lets you transform your video into something magical. The famous green screen effect allows creators to place any image/video behind them. The Bunny In The Sky effect drops virtual eggs from above. The World Warp effect turns your video into a jumbled/colorful mess. And with new effects being added all the time, there’s always something new for users to play with.

At the time of publication, one of TikTok’s most viral video effects is the ‘Rotoscope’ one. You’ve probably already seen Rotoscope videos flooding TikTok’s For You page. These videos often start out with someone dancing without any filters/effects. However, once the beat of a song drops, the video transforms into a myriad of bright colors. The person’s body turns into a cartoon-like outline, the entire video becomes a mishmash of flashing colors, and the result is usually pretty impressive.

How To Use The TikTok Rotoscope Effect

TikTok Rotoscope: What Is The Effect & How Do You Use It?

While TikTok’s Rotoscope effect looks like it’d be difficult to use, it’s as easy as any other effect in the app. If you want to make a Rotoscope video for yourself, here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Open the TikTok app on your phone.
  • Tap the ‘+’ icon at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap ‘Effects’ next to the record button.
  • Tap the search icon.
  • Type ‘Rotoscope.’
  • Tap the Rotoscope effect.

Now you’re ready to start recording! As soon as TikTok sees you nod your head, it replaces your normal video with a rotoscoped one. You can’t nod your head again to return to the normal video style, so make sure to only nod once you’re ready for the effect to start. Once the video changes to its rotoscoped effect, tapping the screen changes your facial style (giving you different sunglasses, eyebrows, nose, and mouth).

While applying the Rotoscope effect is simple enough, there’s plenty of room for creativity to use it however you want. You can use it while busting out serious dance moves, doing everyday chores around the house, or seeing how it looks on your friends/family. You can also use the Rotoscope effect with whatever song you’d like. By default, TikTok pairs the Rotoscope effect with the Captain (Whistle) song. If you want to change it, just tap the music icon at the top of the screen and pick whatever song/sound you prefer.
