Lily Gladstone’s upcoming sci-fi movie has a good chance of making up for her major snub at the 2024 Oscars. After an incredible year for film in 2023, the 2024 Oscars were truly a night to remember. Although the 2024 Oscar nominations included some big snubs, the awards themselves went to some pretty deserving winners.

Poor Things

The biggest snub of the night was undoubtedly Lily Gladstone’s Best Actress loss. The Killers of the Moon star, who was the first Native American to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars, was expected to take home the prize, especially after their recent win at the SAG Awards. However, Gladstone had been neck-and-neck with Emma Stone all awards season, and ultimately, Stone took home the Oscar for her performance in Poor Things. Stone’s Best Actress win at the 2024 Oscars was the most shocking result of the night, but Gladstone’s upcoming sci-fi movie could vindicate this snub by the Academy.

Why Lily Gladstone Could Win An Oscar For The Memory Police

The film adaptation of the acclaimed sci-fi novel has a lot going for it already

Gladstone’s upcoming film The Memory Police could give her the Oscar she was robbed of at the 2024 Oscars. Based on Yōko Ogawa’s 1994 dystopian sci-fi novel of the same name, The Memory Police is about the inhabitants of a mysterious island who are subjected to inexplicable, collective amnesia by the titular organization. The film is set to be directed by Reed Morano with a screenplay from Charlie Kaufman. The Memory Police will also see Gladstone reuniting with Killers of the Flower Moon director Martin Scorsese, who is attached to the project as an executive producer.

Although her role has yet to be identified, The Memory Police has the potential to earn Gladstone another Oscar nomination and even a win this time based on the filmmakers behind the project alone. Known for writing mind-bending, surrealist scripts, Kaufman is one of the most renowned screenwriters in modern cinema. He won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in 2005, and was previously nominated for Being John Malkovich in 2000 and Adaptation in 2003.

Both the lead and supporting actors in Charlie Kaufman’s movies often receive Oscar nominations as well, such as Kate Winslet (Eternal Sunshine) and Nicholas Cage (Adaptation). In terms of genre and themes, The Memory Police is right in Kaufman’s wheelhouse. As for Morano, although she is best known for her cinematography, her directing work on The Handmaid‘s Tale and Billions has also earned her some positive recognition in recent years. Gladstone reuniting with Scorsese on The Memory Police is also reassuring, given how well they clearly worked together on Killers of the Flower Moon.

Despite her loss, Gladstone’s Oscar-nominated performance in Killers of the Flower Moon put her on the Academy’s radar. Now, every future film performance of hers will, at the very least, draw their attention, making it more likely for her to be considered for a nomination if she delivers in The Memory Police. If Gladstone does end up winning an Oscar for The Memory Police, it would make up for their Best Actress snub at the 2024 Oscars.

Killers of the Flower Moon extended an unfathomable Oscars record that Martin Scorsese has thanks to the movie’s poor performance at the 2024 awards.

Why Lily Gladstone Didn’t Win Best Actress At The Oscars 2024

Emma Stone won for Poor Things instead

Leading up to the 2024 Oscars, it seemed like Gladstone had Best Actress in the bag. Her moving performance as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon, which chronicles the true story of the Osage County murders in the 1920s, had already earned her a number of accolades, including the SAG Award for Best Actress and Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. However, Stone had also racked up an impressive collection of awards for her performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things and even beat Gladstone for Best Actress at the BAFTAS.

Although Stone’s Oscar win was unexpected, it wasn’t completely out of left field given her track record this awards season. Both she and Gladstone gave Oscar-worthy performances, but the likely reason Stone came out victorious lies in how her performance differed from her biggest competition. Poor Things is a comedy, and Stone’s performance as Bella was much more brash, showy, and energetic than Gladstone’s restrained, understated performance as Mollie. Ultimately, the former tends to make more of an impression on Oscar voters than the latter, even if both performances are equally deserving.

What Else Is Lily Gladstone Doing After Killers Of The Flower Moon?

Gladstone has another movie and a miniseries lined up

Along with The Memory Police, Gladstone is following up their Oscar-nominated Killers of the Flower Moon performance with several other upcoming projects. Gladstone will be starring as investigator Cam Betland in the Hulu miniseries Under the Bridge, which premieres on April 17, 2024. Based on the 2005 book Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk, by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series will explore the real-life case of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl who was brutally murdered in Saanich, British Columbia in 1997.

Gladstone is also set to reprise her role as Tana in Jazzy, a companion piece to The Unknown Country (2022), written and directed by Morissa Maltz (via Deadline). Based on a story by Maltz, Gladstone, Lainey Bearkiller Shangreaux, and Vanara Taing, The Unknown Country follows a grieving Tana on a road trip across America. On her journey, she meets a young Oglala Lakota girl named Jazzy (played by and based on Shangreaux’s real-life daughter, Jasmine Shangreaux). Jazzy will follow the titular character over a period of six years as she and her friends navigate the transition from childhood to adulthood.
