This Squid Game Character Will Be Way More Important Than Gi-Hun In Season 2

Lee Jung-jae’s Seong Gi-gun returns in Squid Game season 2, but the show’s most important character should no longer be Player 456. Even though Squid Game did not necessarily ask for a sequel, the series was bound to continue after it broke all sorts of records to become Netflix’s biggest show of all time. Squid Game season 2 premiers in 2024 as part of Netflix’s K-content slate for this year, and while not much has been revealed about the story, an official clip has been released.

Squid Game season 2’s cast will see a lot of new faces, which makes sense considering all the previous 455 players have died. The first clip teased that Gwi-nam is going after those behind the games, a decision he made after seeing the Salesman recruiting another person to a new edition of the deadly competition. This puts Gi-hum on a collision course against the Front Man, arguably the show’s most dangerous character now that Il-nam is dead. The Front Man has been unmasked, at least to the viewers, meaning Squid Game 2 could be partially told from his perspective too.

The Front Man Should Be Squid Game Season 2’s Most Important Character

The Front Man’s past has yet to be explored

Actor Lee Byung-hun will reprise his role as the Front Man in Squid Game season 2, and the character is set to be even more important than Gi-hun based on how the first season ended. While Gi-hun is Squid Game’s main character and will continue to be the focus of the show, there are more unanswered questions about the Front Man than about player 456. Whereas Gi-hun’s goal is very clear – he wants to stop the games and take down those behind it –, the Front Man still hides a lot of secrets.

Given how most of the Squid Game characters were dead by the end of the first season, season 2 might want to focus on returning names like the Front Man and the Salesman (played by Gong Yoo). The games themselves might take the back seat in Squid Game season 2, which could instead explore the operation behind the deadly challenges and how they can be stopped, thus offering more information about the Front Man’s past. Gi-hun’s mission to stop the games means the Front Man is now his biggest enemy.

Additionally, since Il-num died in Squid Game’s finale, the Front Man might now be the one running everything, or at least the Korean games. It is unclear who will be in charge of the operation following the death of “Player 001,” but the Front Man is the one who called Gwi-num in episode 10 to tell Player 456 not to come after him. If the Front Man is now the one in charge, this would give him an even bigger role in Squid Game 2 than he had in season 1.

Everything We Know About The Front Man In Squid Game

The Front Man’s real name is Hwang In-ho

This Squid Game Character Will Be Way More Important Than Gi-Hun In Season 2

Hwang Jun-ho, the detective from Squid Game, spent most of the show trying to find what happened to his brother, only to learn that he was the Front Man. Before he was the Front Man, Hwang In-ho participated in the 28th Squid Game as Player 132 in 2015. Five years later, In-ho disappeared without informing his family where he was going, which is why his brother was looking for him. At some point between 2015 and 2020, In-ho went from a former Squid Game winner to one of the games organizers and hosted the 33rd edition as the Front Man.

It has also been established that In-ho donated a kidney to his brother, indicating he once cared about his family. However, after revealing himself to Jun-ho, the Front Man shot his own brother without showing any remorse. While Jun-ho survived, what happened between him and his brother toward the end of season 1 indicates that the Front Man may be beyond redemption. In-ho believes that the games are actually fair despite their cruelty, which makes the Front Man a fascinating villain whose horrible actions are, from his perspective, justifiable.

How The Front Man & Gi-hun’s Stories Are Connected In Squid Game

The Front Man and Gi-hun in Squid Game

The Front Man will pose a threat to Gi-hun in Squid Game in many ways. Firstly, as the one presumably running things, the Front Man will be the personification of everything Gi-hun is fighting against. To stop the games, Gi-hun will have to stop the Front Man. Secondly, In-ho’s beliefs go against Gi-hun’s views of the world, which became clear at the end of season 1. Whereas Gi-hun did not even want to use his money because of all the cruelty he witnessed, In-ho believes that the games are a fair answer to life’s unfairness.

Don’t Expect Squid Game Season 2 To Be Anything Like Season 1 (& That’s Good)

Squid Game season 2 is set to be very different from the first season, and that is good news for Netflix’s massively successful Korean show.

Most importantly, the Front Man is a reminder of what Gi-hun could become. It is important to remember that Gi-hun refused to use his money for a year, choosing instead to live as a homeless man. Considering that Jun-ho was not aware that his brother became a millionaire in 2015, it can be assumed that In-ho also had a difficult time going back to the “real world” after winning the 2015 Squid Game. In-ho’s trauma and delusion after the games, which Gi-hun is also going through, is likely what led him to become the Front Man.

Wil Gi-hun Become The New Front Man In Squid Game Season 2?

Will Squid Game’s most popular theory come true?

Custom image of the Front Man and Gi-hun in Squid Game

One of the most popular Squid Game theories is that Gi-hun will become the new Front Man at some point. Season 2 could be about Gi-hun’s “fall to the dark side,” perhaps after his quest of taking down the games proves to be worthless. Squid Game needs to reinvent itself considering how self-contained the first season was, and the best way to do it is to take Gi-hun’s character in an unexpected direction. Making Gi-hun into the new Front Man could work, but it could also ruin the show’s main character beyond repair if not done right.

Not much has been shown from Squid Game season 2 so far, making it difficult to predict what it will be about, and how it will differ from the first season. Still, it can be assumed that season 2 will be even more character-focused than season 1 given that audiences are already attached to Gi-hun. If Squid Game goes on for multiple seasons, season 2 could end with Gi-hun becoming the new Front Man in a tragic twist. Even if that doesn’t happen, the parallels between Gi-hun and the current Front Man are already valid.
