This Love Actually Character Was Supposed To Be A Supernatural Being (Seriously)

One of Love Actually ‘s characters was supposed to be more than a regular person and was intended to have supernatural powers. Love Actually is one of the most recognizable rom-coms of all time, and, given its popularity and Christmas setting, many viewers re-watch Love Actually around that time. As a result, there are always things to be discovered or revisited in the film. Despite some portions of Love Actually not having aged well, some viewers revert to Love Actually yearly, and one less-known fact is that one character was intended to have a supernatural background.

Love Actually is one of the best Christmas movies. It was released in 2003 and directed by Richard Curtis of Four Weddings and a Funeral fame. Among the Love Actually actors are Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laura Linney, and the late Alan Rickman. The festive classic followed ten separate stories that involved many different characters, many of whom ended up being interlinked as the story progressed, whether it was about love, friendship, or missed chances. Although there was a certain magic in the air due to the holiday, none of the characters had special powers.

The beloved characters from Love Actually went through some changes after the movie ended, and its short sequel helped answer unanswered questions.

Rowan Atkinson’s Rufus Was Supposed To Be An Angel In Love Actually

Atkinson plays a jewelry sales agent

Rowan Atkinson’s role in Love Actually isn’t big, but he was supposed to have a deeper meaning. His character, Rufus, was a jewelry sales agent who was originally supposed to be an angel. Rufus has one of the best Love Actually quotes, and his character is one of the funniest. Love Actually script editor Emma Freud, who is also the director’s wife, rewatched the Christmas film in 2015, revealing some details about the characters via X/ former Twitter. She explained that “Originally Rowan’s character over-wrapped the gift on purpose to stop Alan Rickman being able to buy the necklace. Because he was an angel.”

Rufus appeared in a scene with Alan Rickman’s Harry, and he tried to stop Harry from cheating on his wife. At the time, Harry was at the mall with his wife, Karen (Thompson), and decided to buy a necklace for his secretary, Mia. To avoid that, Rufus started overwrapping the collar Harry wanted to buy for his secretary, Mia (Heike Makatsch). Although Christmas films tend to include angel-like characters to help their leads, the story with Atkinson’s Rufus being an angel was dropped in the final script. Rufus ended up being a regular character and eventually failed to stop Harry from buying the necklace, as shown in a later scene.

How Rufus Helped Other Characters In Love Actually

Rufus’ storyline involves helping people

Rowan Atkinson’s second appearance cements his character’s helpful nature. Rufus reappears towards the end of the movie and is vital in Sam’s (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) storyline as he tries to reach Joanna (Olivia Olson) to tell her about his feelings. He stalled the gate agent at the airport as he looked for his boarding ticket, allowing Sam to squeeze by and run after Joanna. Although Rufus didn’t turn out to be an angel, he didn’t need to be one to prove his kindness towards strangers in need, and his second scene did highlight his character’s original trait as an angel in Love Actually.
