“They Wish Me A— Cancer”: Jason Goes To Hell Director Details Backlash From Friday The 13th Fans For Infamous Sequel

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday director Adam Marcus recalls the backlash he faced after the release of the infamous sequel. The ninth installment in the popular Friday the 13th franchise saw iconic slasher Jason Voorhees return as a malevolent spirit seeking the means to resurrect himself following his death in the movie’s opening. The sequel, which starred John D. LeMay, Kane Hodder, Kari Keegan, and Steven Williams, was poorly received upon release by audiences and critics alike, grossing only $15.9 million on a budget of $3 million and becoming the second-worst performing movie in the franchise.

In a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, Adam Marcus reveals some of the negative reactions and responses he received following the release of Jason Goes to Hell. He explains that fans who dislike this particular installment of the Friday the 13th franchise are quite rabid, some of whom accuse him of ruining their childhood and even going as far as wishing him a particular form of cancer. Read his full comments below:

People who don’t like Jason Goes to Hell are rabid. They’re not your average haters; they’re knives-out from the second you meet them. [Chuckles] When people go, ‘That’s not canon,’ I’m like, ‘No, bitches, it’s canon! I made Jason a Deadite. I did that!’ If you were the right age when the movie came out, if you weren’t a Friday fan from the first movie but you came in the middle or right before my movie, those folks tend to love Jason Goes to Hell. If you’re my age, and you were a crazy fan from the first one on, we have a lot of talking that goes on between us. I ruined their childhood, they wish me ass cancer. All of these things happen on a regular basis. Everybody talks about Jason Goes to Hell. Everybody’s got an opinion. Every hater has a copy of it in their collection — and on multiple formats! The fans are amazing. The haters are kind of amazing too, even though it’s hard to wake up in the morning and see someone tweet about you being a fat nepo baby. That stuff does get under my skin, I’m not gonna lie. It’s crazy for people to think that their casual bullying doesn’t affect artists. We carry it with us the rest of our days.

Why Was Jason Goes To Hell So Disliked?

“They Wish Me A— Cancer”: Jason Goes To Hell Director Details Backlash From Friday The 13th Fans For Infamous Sequel

According to the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday currently holds an incredibly low 15% approval rating, with the consensus among viewers and critics indicating that the movie was pretty underwhelming. As earlier mentioned, the critical reception for the sequel was reflective in its terrible box office performance, which placed it just above its predecessor, Jason Takes Manhattan, as the worst performing film in the popular horror franchise.

There are a number of reasons why many fans and critics disliked Jason Goes to Hell. One major criticism that many viewers had was the movie’s clumsy writing, which made it largely incoherent and hard to follow for the most part. Another major problem of the horror movie was the acting performances, which were mostly lackluster and did very little to elevate it as a whole. The sole exceptions have stood to be Williams’ turn as the enigmatic bounty hunter Creighton Duke and Jason himself in Jason Goes to Hell‘s infamous canon break in which his spirit convinces a potential victim he’s not possessing the body he’s currently in.
