Laura Dern has shared an update on Big Little Lies season 3. The dark comedy is based on Liane Moriarty’s thriller novel of the same name and follows five mothers whose picturesque lives in Monterey, California begin to unravel when they get entangled in a murder mystery. Initially, the show was meant to be a limited series, but its critical acclaim resulted in further episodes. Now that it is going on five years since season 2 premiered in June 2019, viewers have questioned if season 3 is really happening.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dern provided a hopeful update on Big Little Lies season 3. Dern explained that she doesn’t know much more than audiences do at this point. However, she could confirm that executive producers Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are working on “dreaming up” season 3. Check out her statement below:
I can tell you that all of us who are involved in it would never imagine a better time. We love each other so much and would have the time of our life being back together, and we love our characters so much. I truly know what you know. But I know that it is something that they are working diligently at dreaming up, and I sure hope it comes to fruition.
Is Big Little Lies Season 3 Actually Happening?
While optimistic, Dern’s statement doesn’t wholly confirm the new season will come to be — just that Kidman and Witherspoon are attempting to make it a reality. Unfortunately, aside from Dern’s statement, there have been few updates on the possible new season. For years after Big Little Lies season 2 ended, there was little talk of the show continuing.
The idea of season 3 wasn’t discussed with much confidence until November of 2023. At that time, while speaking at a Q&A event, Kidman surprised viewers when she stated that she and Witherspoon were bringing them another season of Big Little Lies. When appearing at this year’s Golden Globes, Witherspoon doubled down on her statement, confirming that she and Kidman were developing season 3. However, despite assurances that work is happening, HBO has not officially greenlit season 3.
The show has a few obstacles to new episodes. Big Little Lies director and executive producer, Jean-Marc Vallée, sadly passed away in 2021. Cast members like Zoë Kravitz have expressed doubt about returning for another season without Vallée. She described him as a “visionary” of the show, questioning whether it could or should go on without him. Additionally, the series’ star-studded cast has spread far and wide since season 2, and getting the whole ensemble back together likely won’t be easy. However, Dern’s statement implies that, despite the obstacles, the Big Little Lies team is committed to making season 3.
