TikTok was reportedly the most downloaded app worldwide in 2021. With the pandemic showing no signs of relenting, streaming services, video games, and mobile apps have become the go-to destinations for most people looking to keep themselves entertained. This has led to a huge upsurge in users of social media networks and streaming services, with TikTok seemingly winning big this year.

The latest report comes just days after App Annie released its list of the most downloaded apps and games on Christmas Day 2021. According to the report, TikTok was the most downloaded app globally and in the U.S. on Dec. 25, suggesting the app’s continued popularity in the U.S. and beyond. Earlier this month, a Sensor Tower report revealed that the short video app was the highest grossing app globally this year ahead of YouTube, Tinder and Disney+.

App analytics and mobile industry intelligence firm Apptopia has released a new report that lists the most downloaded apps and games of 2021. TikTok came in at number one globally with 656 million downloads during the year, while Instagram came in at number two with 545 million downloads. While the top two positions are occupied by the same two apps globally and in the U.S., the list veers off in slightly different directions thereafter. Globally, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, Snapchat, Zoom, Facebook Messenger, Capcut, and Spotify round out the top-ten, while in the U.S., Snapchat follows TikTok and Instagram at number three, with Cash App, Zoom, FB Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, and HBO Max rounding out the top-ten.

In terms of games, Subway Surfers and Roblox were the top two mobile games globally with 191 million and 182 million downloads during the year, respectively. The rest of the games on the global list include Bridge Race, Garena Free Fire – New Age, Among Us, Hair Challenge, Join Clash, 8 Ball Pool, Ludo King, and Candy Crush Saga. In the U.S., the top-ten games include Roblox, Project Makeover, Among Us, Subway Surfers, Bridge Race, High Heels!, Magic Tiles 3, Wordscapes, Paper Fold, and Call of Duty Mobile.

In the other categories, Tinder was the most downloaded dating app with 67 million downloads, while Zoom was unsurprisingly the most downloaded business app with more than 300 million downloads. Google Classroom was the most downloaded education app globally, while in the U.S., that honor went to Picture This. The top health and fitness app was Flo Ovulation & Period Tracker, while Spotify was the biggest music and audio app with a whopping 203 million downloads globally. Binance was the biggest crypto app, Amazon the most popular shopping app, Uber the go-to travel app, and DoorDash the most downloaded food and drink app in the U.S. during the year. All the data is iOS + Google Play Store combined, except for China, where the data comes from iOS only because Play Store is unavailable in the country.
