There’s No Need To Worry About Super Mario Bros. Movie 2…Yet

On a budget of $100 million, The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed $1.36 billion, making it the second highest-grossing movie of 2023 behind Barbie. However, despite The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s success guaranteeing a sequel in the franchise, there’s been a surprisingly low number of positive updates from Universal Pictures, Illumination, or even Nintendo regarding the status of The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s sequel.

Despite the lack of updates regarding The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, the movie introduced enough Mario characters that could easily carry their own franchises. Plus, in addition to the sheer number of worlds Universal and Illumination could adapt for The Super Mario Bros. 2, a Luigi’s Mansion movie could redeem his character in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, among a number of other avenues it could pursue. With the abundance of source material to adapt and the first movie’s overwhelming success at the box office, it’s only a matter of time before an official sequel announcement makes headlines.

Although Barbie is the highest grossing movie of the 2023’s, The Super Mario Bros. The Movie 2 is inevitable considering its box-office returns and positive reception. Furthermore, the Super Mario Bros. universe is so vast that the producers of The Super Mario Bros. Movie could take any single character from the franchise, and adapt any one of their games into a feature-length movie. Additionally, The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s success coupled with Sonic The Hedgehog 2‘s has paved the way for more video game adaptations. While quality is more valuable than quantity, it still begs the question as to why news regarding a sequel is so scarce.

Even with minimal updates, each update for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 has been disappointing, to say the least. Even with Bowser voice actor Jack Black pitching his idea for a Bowser-focused sequel, the actor has confirmed he’s heard no new news regarding The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Chris Pratt also confirmed the WGA strike put a halt to The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2‘s plans, but with the strike reaching a resolution, things can hopefully move forward. Additionally, The Super Mario Bros. The Movie has found major success on streaming, which should give it room to gain new life among audiences while the studios figure things out.

Nintendo focusing on The Legend of Zelda live-action movie is another strong reason why there are no positive updates for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Their focus could be on delivering another successful entry in their live-action adaptation repertoire, which may push The Super Mario Bros. 2 further down the priorities list. As unfortunate as the recent news might be, Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo taking their time with The Super Mario Bros. 2 could be a blessing in disguise, as it suggests they’re more interested in delivering a quality product over riding the momentum of the first movie’s success.
