There’s A Brilliant Everything Everywhere All At Once Connection In The Brothers Sun

There’s A Brilliant Everything Everywhere All At Once Connection In The Brothers Sun

Michelle Yeoh’s new show The Brothers Sun made a perfect callback to Everything Everywhere All at Once with one casting trick. The Brothers Sun follows the story of the Sun family, who is also the head of the Jade Dragons, a Triad crime syndicate based in Taipei. Their illegal dealings spill over into Los Angeles when eldest brother and heir Charles (Justin Chien) goes there to protect his mother, Eileen (Yeoh), and brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li). Bruce was forced to learn the ropes quickly, as a rival gang sent assassins after the family to overthrow them.

There are some strong similarities between The Brothers Sun and Everything Everywhere All at Once, like the fact that both are blends of comedy and action. There is a much more subtle connection linking two of Yeoh’s hits, though, hidden within the cast of The Brothers Sun. The show focuses on the relationship between the brothers Bruce and Charles, as they both get satisfying character development by the ending of The Brothers Sun, but there is another brother duo in the show that acts as a connection to Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The Brothers Sun Wang Brothers Are In Everything Everywhere All At Once

The Wang brothers and Charles Sun in The Brothers Sun

The Wang brothers, hired muscle for the Jade Dragons and lifelong friends of Charles, made their debut in episode 7 of The Brothers Sun. Their appearance was quickly overshadowed by the revelation that Big Sun (Johnny Kou) had survived the gunshot wound he received in the first episode. However, two of the three brothers, JC (Brian Le) and Justin (Andy Le), are brothers in real life, and played an iconic role as part of the cast of Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Brian and Andy Le have a long filmography together, mostly doing stunt work. In Everything Everywhere All at Once, their big scene became known as the “Trophy” fight scene. In the movie, characters had to do unexpected things to access alternate versions of themselves and the powers those versions had. During one fight scene, Andy Le’s character had to stick a trophy up his butt to access a new form of martial arts. Once he had, he fought side by side with his real-life brother against Michelle Yeoh’s character, Evelyn Wang. Their extended fight sequence in The Brothers Sun with third actor, Yoshi Sudarso (Lance Wang), was reminiscent of their hyper-stylized Everything Everywhere fight.

Along with The Brothers Sun and Everything Everywhere All at Once, Brian and Andy Le have worked together throughout most of their careers. Andy played Death Dealer in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, in which Brian also did uncredited stunt work. They also both appeared in shows like Wu-Tang: An American Saga, movies like The Paper Tigers, and even in the music video for Van Ness Wu’s “Take a Ride.”

Michelle Yeoh has had a long career that has recently experienced new highs. It’s great to see that The Brothers Sun has continued the actress’s hot streak while also bringing back former collaborators. The connection between The Brothers Sun and Everything Everywhere All At Once was done beautifully, and only makes the show even better. Hopefully, the Le brothers will continue to make a name for themselves in Hollywood with their incredible stuntwork and fighting skills, and their growing body of acting work.
