There Is Only 1 Thing Missing From Taylor Swift’s Career After The Eras Tour Movie’s Success

There Is Only 1 Thing Missing From Taylor Swift’s Career After The Eras Tour Movie’s Success

Following the success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, there’s still one feat the multi-faceted artist has yet to accomplish in her long-spanning career. Swift had previously released concert films before The Eras Tour movie, but none came close to its acclaim, popularity or success, nor were they given theatrical runs. Like the record-breaking world tour itself, The Eras Tour movie marked a huge new milestone in Swift’s career.

Alongside the release of The Eras Tour movie, Swift has continued to dominate the music industry with impressive album sales, streaming numbers, and major awards, including record-breaking Grammy wins. In addition to music, Swift has also dipped her toe into the acting world by starring in films like Valentine’s Day, Cats, and Amsterdam and TV shows like New Girl. There’s no doubt that Swift is an accomplished and well-rounded artist, but there’s one hat she has yet to try on in the entertainment industry.

Taylor Swift Has Yet To Direct A Feature Film (& We Hope She Will)

Swift Has Directed Several Music Videos, A Short Film, & A Concert Documentary

Although she has directed several of her own music-related projects, Swift has yet to direct a (nondocumentary) feature film. Swift first took a seat in the director’s chair for the music video of “Mine,” the lead single off her third studio album Speak Now in 2010, which she co-directed with Roman White. Swift’s first solo directorial venture was nine years later with the music video for “ME!,” the lead single off her seventh studio album Lover. Since then, Swift has directed twelve of her music videos as well as Swift’s 2020 concert documentary, Folklore: The Long Pond Sessions.

Given her experience with directing music videos and a concert documentary as well as her knack for lyrical storytelling, Swift is well-suited to direct a feature film. It was actually announced back in December 2022 that Swift would write and direct her first full-length movie in collaboration with Searchlight Pictures, but there have been no updates since then. Hopefully, after the release of Swift’s next album The Tortured Poets Department on April 19, 2024, and the conclusion of The Eras Tour on December 8, 2024, Swift’s next move will be writing and directing this untitled Searchlights film.

Taylor Swift’s All Too Well Short Film Suggests She’s Ready To Helm A Feature

Swift Wrote & Directed The 15-Minute Short Film For The 10-Minute Vault Track From Red (Taylor’s Version)

Every music video directed by Swift has demonstrated her keen eye and knack for visual storytelling, but All Too Well: The Short Film proves she has what it takes to helm a feature film. As part of the release of her second re-recorded album, Red (Taylor’s Version), on November 12, 2021, Swift wrote and directed a 15-minute short film adaptation of the vault track “All Too Well (10 Minute Version),” the unabridged version of the 5-minute Red track of the same name about a relationship gone wrong.

Starring Sadie Sink as the song’s narrator and Dylan O’Brien as her older boyfriend, All Too Well: The Short Film brings the titular song’s story to life onscreen. The song serves as a musical backdrop for the short, broken up only by a three-minute verbal dispute between the central couple. At the end of the film, Swift plays an older version of Sink’s character (who is a self-insert for a younger Swift) thirteen years later.

All Too Well: The Short Film received high praise and was nominated at several award shows, including the Grammys, where Swift won Best Music Video. The short film was also screened at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 11, 2022, and the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2022. The work Swift did on All Too Well: The Short Film and the project’s positive reception prove that a feature film would be in good hands with Swift.

The Eras Tour Movie’s Success Proves Taylor Swift’s Box Office Power

The Eras Tour Movie Broke Several Box Office Records

All Too Well: The Short Film proves that Swift could pull off directing a feature film on a craft level, and the commercial success of The Eras Tour movie shows that Swift is a major force to be reckoned with at the box office. Upon its release on October 13, 2023, The Eras Tour movie broke several other box office records. During its subsequent three-month theatrical run, The Eras Tour movie earned $261.7 million worldwide at the box office (via Box Office Mojo), surpassing Justin Bieber: Never Say Never as the highest-grossing concert film of all time.

The Eras Tour movie’s success continued to reach new heights when an extended cut called Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) hit streaming on March 14, 2024. Garnering 4.6 million views and 16.2 million hours viewed on Disney+ during its opening weekend, The Eras Tour movie broke a Disney+ streaming record by becoming the most streamed concert film on the platform.

With these stats, it’s undeniable that Swift can attract audiences no matter the viewing medium. Her star power alone would be enough to sell tickets out the door and rack up views for her feature directorial debut, making her a bankable film director to invest in. If Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour has taught the world anything, it’s that Swift’s pull should not be underestimated.
