‘The World’s End’ Trailer: Edgar Wright’s Apocalypse, Revealed

Gary King has seen better days. A middle-aged burnout, King yearns for a return to the debauched glories of yesteryear. On the 20-year anniversary of a truly epic pub crawl (that was ultimately incomplete), King gathers his former partners in crime – all now with respectable lives and careers – and drags them back on a remembrance tour of what he considers the best night of his life.

However, even as the former friends set to getting proper wasted, they realize that the town they left behind hides a secret that threatens the future of the human race. Now, King and his cohorts must muster all their courage to survive … and to reach their final destination at The World’s End.

The World’s End reunites director Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) with frequent collaborators Simon Pegg (Star Trek: Into Darkness) and Nick Frost (Attack the Block). Also in on the shenanigans are Martin Freeman (Sherlock), Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz), and Eddie Marsan (Snow White and the Huntsman).

‘The World’s End’ Trailer: Edgar Wright’s Apocalypse, Revealed

This first trailer for The World’s End reveals at long last exactly what the film’s central disaster will be. Rather than the initial reports of a nonspecific apocalypse, we can now confirm that The World’s End involves a good-ol’-fashioned alien invasion. Shades of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (complete with accusatory shrieking) and The War of the Worlds (notice the dodged tripod leg) abound.

Fans have been waiting with bated breath for the final installment of the “Blood and Ice Cream” or “Three Flavors Cornetto” trilogy of parodies since 2007’s Hot Fuzz – and it looks as if the wait has been completely worth it. With its US release date officially moved from October to August, The World’s End is something a final capper for the summer blockbuster season. If this first glimpse is anything to go by, The World’s End will close out the season with one heck of a bang.
