The Witcher Season 2 Honest Trailer Mocks Endless Spinoffs

The new episode of Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailers series mocks The Witcher season 2 and its setup of endless spinoffs for Netflix. Henry Cavill leads the cast of the fantasy drama as Geralt of Rivia, a magically enhanced monster hunter who travels through the medieval landscape known as The Continent taking out various threats and coming to terms with his destiny as the protector of Cirilla, the crown princess of Cintra. The Witcher season 2 follows Geralt and Ciri as they journey to his childhood home of Kaer Morhen in an effort to keep her safe from Nilfgaardian and demonic forces and train her for the fights ahead, all the while Geralt’s love Yennefer of Vengerberg struggles to regain her magic powers.

Alongside Cavill, the cast for The Witcher is led by Freya Allan as Ciri, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Eamon Farren as Nilfgaardian commander Cahir, Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold and Joey Batey as traveling bard Jaskier. Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books of the same name, the series has proven to be a smash hit for Netflix since its debut in late 2019, earning back-to-back renewals and spawning two completed spinoffs. With one spinoff, the prequel miniseries The Witcher: Blood Origin, gearing up to release later this year, fans of the fantasy world won’t go without Witcher content for long.

Over a month after its premiere on Netflix, Screen Junkies has returned with a new Honest Trailers episode setting its sights on The Witcher season 2. The video hilariously points out Cavill’s focus on grunts and sighs for his performance as Geralt as well as the show’s heavy focus on setting up endless spinoffs for the streaming platform. Given Sapkowski’s Witcher series is comprised of six novels and 15 short stories, there is no shortage of material for the creatives behind the Netflix franchise to explore on screen. Additionally, the fantasy genre has largely thrived on television since HBO began bringing George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones novels to life, with other networks and streamers adapting various novels, including fellow Netflix title Shadow and Bone, which recently began production on season 2. Though The Witcher saw audience reception flip between seasons 1 and 2, going from a 90 percent approval rating in the former to a 60 percent in the latter on Rotten Tomatoes, the show has nonetheless proven to be a success, becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched shows of all-time within a month of its premiere.

This success has led to the streamer working on multiple spinoffs to The Witcher, which has seen a generally mixed response from fans, as pointed out in the season 2 Honest Trailer. The announcement of a family-friendly Witcher series specifically drew criticism from fans of the source material given the adult nature of the universe and characters. Audiences can catch up with The Witcher season 2 streaming on Netflix now.
