The Voice: Gwen Admits She Didn’t Know Who Blake Was Before The Show

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton may be happily married, but the No Doubt lead singer admits that she had no idea who her husband was before joining The Voice. Gwen joined the singing competition show in 2014 for the seventh season as Shakira’s replacement. However, the singer did not remain on the show for consecutive seasons; instead, she came and went appearing only in seasons 7, 9, 12, 17, and 19. Gwen and Blake met while filming the show, however, at the time, Gwen was still married to her ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale, and Blake was with fellow country singer Miranda Lambert. Both couples split in 2015, and Gwen and Blake began dating. The couple married in July 2021.

While Gwen admittedly didn’t know who Blake was, the country singer had already had some impressive feats before meeting his current wife on The Voice. Blake is an eight-time Grammy-nominated artist with 29 BMI Awards and two #1 albums on the Billboard 200 charts. The country singer also did a cover of Kenny Loggin’s “Footloose” for the 2011 remake of Herbert Ross’ 1984 film of the same name. He also has friendships with big stars like Taylor Swift, who told the coach on a 2019 episode of the show that she wrote about meeting him in her diary when she was 15.

Gwen and Blake currently have four songs together, but Gwen told Apple Music that before she was a coach on the competition show, she didn’t know who Blake was. While they may not have run into each other due to their differing music genres, one would think they’d still know who each other were. However, the “Hollaback Girl” singer revealed that she didn’t even know there was a Blake Shelton. Gwen said, “I didn’t know Blake. I didn’t even know that he existed as a human, let alone an artist.” The star admits that once she joined the show, she started googling Blake and his music so she could learn more about him.

Gwen admitted that she started to see Blake’s appeal when one of her nannies mentioned that she thought he was “hot.” She said it was then that she started paying attention to how funny he was on the show. Blake and Gwen both have individual Christmas albums, and on Gwen’s, she and Blake duetted for the album’s title track, “You Make It Feel Like Christmas.” The song was accompanied by a vintage-inspired music video where the singers are seen driving in an old car, building a snowman, and decorating their living room for the festive holiday.

While The Voice coach may have already been a certified Country music star by the time Gwen found out about him, surely he can forgive his wife for not knowing who he was. Gwen’s lack of Blake knowledge may have been a blessing in disguise since she had no preconceived notions of the singer and was able to get to know him for who he was. Gwen’s confession doesn’t seem to have hurt the couple as they spent their first married Christmas together and will surely make many more memories together in the new year.
