New Stranger Things season 4 set photos show the Upside Down gradually taking over a trailer park. The fourth season of Netflix’s hit sci-fi series is highly-anticipated among fans, yet it’s taking a bit longer than expected to arrive. Stranger Things season 3 premiered back in July 2019 and left fans with a surprising cliffhanger involving Jim Hopper (David Harbour). However, the coronavirus pandemic disrupted filming on Stranger Things‘ next episodes, meaning the originally planned early 2021 premiere is out of the question. Now, it seems more likely the new season will arrive later this year.

Until then, fans have been left to theorize and pore over the various teases they’ve received. Stranger Things season 4 is expected to pick up on that lingering Hopper thread, which revealed the grumpy sheriff to have survived the incident at the Hawkins Lab. Unfortunately, he’s now being held in a Russian prison. How he’ll get out is just one of the many questions fans have going into Stranger Things season 4, which was recently touted by star Finn Wolfhard as the darkest one yet. It’s certain the Upside Down isn’t quite done with the characters just yet, and that’s especially clear in some new set pictures.

New images of the Stranger Things set, courtesy of the Daily Mail, reveals a trailer park overrun by the Upside Down. Red and black vines have ensnared trailers, telephone poles, and the sign to the park itself. It isn’t completely clear if this place is in Hawkins, but considering that town’s ties to the Upside Down, it could be likely. Either way, the sheer number of winding tendrils spells trouble for anyone within the vicinity of the trailer park.

Whether this scene truly takes place within the Upside Down (and is just lacking the typical special effects that complete the look) or is proof that the Upside Down has begun to overtake the real world remains to be seen. The latter explanation would have some horrifying consequences for Stranger Things and could certainly help season 4 live up to that reputation of being the scariest one yet. However, the Upside Down is so unpredictable that anything could happen.

Aside from Hopper’s complicated fate, Stranger Things season 3 ended with all the main characters safe and whole, if not completely happy. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Will (Noah Schnapp) left Hawkins alongside Joyce (Winona Ryder), meaning there’s an emotional reunion ahead for Stranger Things‘ young cast. Perhaps the reemergence of the Upside Down will draw Eleven and Will back to town. Right now, everything is speculation, but hopefully it won’t be much longer before new information about Stranger Things arrives.
