WARNING! Major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 3!
The Umbrella Academy season 3 arrived on Netflix on June 22nd following the Hargreeves children as they face their third apocalyptic event in an alternate timeline where they were never even born. While praised for its handling of Elliot Page and Viktor’s transitions, fans have raged against skipping major twists and complete character changes.
Since the third season landed fans have been theorizing what will happen next if it is renewed for a fourth season. With the world reset and the Umbrellas’ powers gone, there is much to speculate. As the show is incredibly chaotic and unpredictable, it is incredibly easy to believe that there’s a possibility that any of these wild and crazy Reddit fan theories could come true.
Allison Is The Villain
Shocked at the character’s development in season 3, many fans have begun to hate Allison Hargreeves. Not only did she blame Viktor for another apocalypse and kill the closest thing he had to a son but she sexually assaulted Luther using her rumor powers. According to Reddit user Year3030, she will be the “new baddie in season 4”.
Many think her “horrifying” actions this season are unforgivable and detest that there have not been consequences of any kind considering she was rewarded with Ray and Claire back when the universe reset. Year3030 likens killing Harlan to Anakin killing younglings believing she has now “gone to the dark side” and is irredeemable.
Sloane Is Alive With Amnesia
After the finale cliffhanger that has changed the design of the entire universe to Reginald Hargreeves’ liking, fans have had much to discuss. Particularly the reason why Sloane was missing from the elevator when the Umbrellas and Ben found themselves in Obsidian Memorial Park where the hotel once stood. A revived and heartbroken Luther runs off to find his wife.
Redditor ArronMaui believes that a “non-powered version of” Sloane is living a normal life and has “no memory of [Luther] whatsoever”. They hypothesize that they will fall in love again in season 4 or Luther will mess things up by “coming on too strong” to a memory-wiped powerless version of his wife.
Intentional Apocalypse
One of the reasons why The Umbrella Academy is so chaotic is the characters’ proficiency with accidentally causing apocalypses. In trying to prevent doomsday, the Umbrellas often make things worse but Reddit user I_Trust_OP believes that the characters will “try to cause the apocalypse” instead of averting one to stop Reginald.
This theory would be beautifully ironic and considering how well they seem to cause apocalyptic events, they would probably do a very good job at it. With Reginald’s reveal as the potential mastermind behind every disaster since season 1, mujie123 believes season 4 will be the show’s “endgame. jessiebears agrees that the Umbrellas actively bringing about the end of the world on purpose would be the “perfect finale” and will put an end to Reginald’s “new dystopian universe”.
Season 4 Opening Scene
Theorizing how season 4 of The Umbrella Academy could open, royblairsb1tch hopes that it will be a montage of the characters trying to live normal lives. They idealize that Klaus and Ben will be roommates as will Viktor and Five. Meanwhile, Luther is playing “happy family” with Sloane, and Diego and Lila will be busy “with their little family”. This admittedly “wishful thinking” is wild considering the show’s normal is pure chaos.
Believing they will be lulled into this “false sense of security” so that they will all be “unprepared for what’s to come”. However, zivosaurus-rex thinks that despite being in a child’s body Five will be “travelling around the world” while Luther searches for a missing Sloane. Other Redditors like harleyyquinade agree that Five will interrupt everyone’s normal routine with “a way to get their powers back” to stop “Reginald’s reign of terror (or aliens)”.
Klaus will Flop
Reddit user jesseybean’s “dumb theory for season 4” is that Klaus is going to become an insufferable character in season 4. jesseybean noticed that every season the character with the corresponding number “flops”. Thinking that Luther was “arguably the worst” character in season 1, Diego was “annoying with the JFK conspiracy” and in season 3 Allison was “by far the worst” with killing Harlan and assaulting Luther.
Going by this theory, the iconic pansexual and non-binary character Klaus will “be entering his flop era” which they believe was set up by their trust in Reginald and being betrayed. jesseybean thinks going after Reginald for revenge or looking for their mother again will lead Klaus to cause some “apocalypse-level hijinks.” However other Redditors like retrohitman12 and Party_Salamander_773 believe it’s impossible for “Klaus to be unlikable”. While an interesting theory, jesseybean also admits it feels like a coincidence and could just be a matter of opinion.
Hotel Oblivion’s Prisoners
With a spiraling character arc that has led her to become despised by fans, Allison is seemingly rewarded for her actions in the season 3 finale. However, Reddit users like Setctrls4heartofsun believes that she could be imprisoned along with Sloane in the Hotel Oblivion which in the comics is a prison housing the notorious criminals caught by the Umbrella Academy.
Considering Reginald knows Allison wants Ray and Claire back, he could have programmed “the Hotel into a prison for her” using her ideal world to keep her placated. However, BH098 thinks Reginald “trapped her in Hotel Oblivion” because he feared Allison the most. They also believe that Allison will be “stuck in some sort of hellish loop” and forced to confront “everything she did” in season 3 “to get there”.
Removed From Existence
Despite barely interacting, Allison makes it very clear that she doesn’t like Sloane. She accuses Luther of choosing some “knockoff [he’s] known for five minutes” over her even though Allison was only using him to fill the hole left by Ray. This leads to Redditors like 8arfts believing that because Allison pressed the reset button she “reset the universe the way she wanted” and it is because “Allison needs all the attention, even from Luther” that Sloane is missing.
The end of season 3 showed Reginald and Allison getting everything they wanted; their wife back and “his name on every building”, while Allison got Ray and Claire back. drcompo02 suggests that Allison specifically asked for Sloane to be removed “out of resentment”. Others agree that the character would believably reach this level “of petty sh*t” and is looking for “payback”
Working For Reginald
In analyzing the Korean subway adverts from the first and last episodes of season 3 and particularly discussing the post-credit scene featuring a version of Ben, redditusername68985 comes up with the theory that it is Sparrow Ben who is working for Reginald. As Yeouido is the financial center of Seoul, the Redditor postulates that Ben “is in cohorts with Reggie in the new timeline/universe” and is in charge of handling “the Korean arm of his enterprise”.
However, other users like ScienceAndGames believes it is everyone in the Sparrow Academy except Ben who is in league with Reginald. Including a reason behind Sloane’s disappearance in the new world, they theorize that the Sparrows are “his own personal guards and enforcers” but their memories have been altered so that they remain “Reggie’s loyal soldiers”.
Allison Is Dead
While some believe that Allison is living in her ideal world with Ray and Claire, Reddit user Dr_Sodium_Chloride postulates that Allison “might actually be dead”. They noted that Ray was seeming “somewhat aware of what was going on” and Crownborn added that “there is no way a timeline reset can bring Ray back” because he doesn’t belong in that era.
As GarethLloyd pointed out, Klaus and Luther’s misadventures through the Void in season 3 show that the afterlife changes depending on a person’s idea of Heaven, and Allison’s version would be reuniting with Ray and Claire. Accomplished-Bad6443 also suggests this will allow Allison “to redeem herself and have a happy ending.”
Lila Isn’t Pregnant Anymore
In season 3, Lila announces she’s pregnant with Diego’s child after pretending that Stanley is their twelve-year-old son. This storyline leads to some of the best quotes in season 3, however, Reddit user ughnagi has theorized that “Lila isn’t pregnant anymore”. This could be because of the power drain, moving to a new reality, or because no one knew of Lila’s pregnancy, but they believe that it will lead to Diego coming for Allison “since the tables kind of turned for them”.
harleyyquinade doesn’t want another “missing kid storyline” and thinks that Lila would “kill Allison herself if she erased her unborn child”. While disagreeing over this they see Allison as “the new Viktor” considering she “f*cked them all over” with several Redditors like Mhatilda_Morter believing Allison “will most likely have powers still” in season 4 since she did not stand on the star-like her siblings.
