Will The Super Mario Movie’s Earlier Release Date Pay Off?

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Gets Even Earlier US Release Date

Though two days may not seem that much of a difference, it will be interesting to see if Universal’s decision for an earlier release date heading into Easter weekend will actually pay off for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. In its original date, the animated film had minimal new competition, with Ben Affleck’s Nike biopic Air hitting theaters two days prior, though now sharing the same date.

On the flip side, however, The Super Mario Bros. Movie does have a pretty extensive roster of holdovers it will be fighting against at the box office in both its original and new release dates. The highly anticipated John Wick: Chapter 4 will be making its theatrical debut just two weeks ahead of the animated film. The Keanu Reeves-led predecessors have rarely retained the top box office spot in subsequent weeks, and will be contending with both Shazam! Fury of the Gods‘ holdover audiences and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves the following week.

Despite the various competition, the anticipation for The Super Mario Bros. Movie could actually propel it to the highest-grossing Easter release, a spot currently held by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with $166 million. This success would help create confidence in Universal and Nintendo to move forward with franchise plans, including a rumored Donkey Kong spinoff with Seth Rogen reprising his role. Only time will tell if it can reach new Easter weekend heights when The Super Mario Bros. Movie hits theaters in the US and other regions on April 5.
