The Strangers: Chapter 1 Trailer Teases Killer Trio’s Origin Story (With Tons Of Nods To The Original)

A trailer for The Strangers: Chapter 1 has been released, teasing the origin story of the main killer trio, offering many references to the original movie along the way. The horror movie is the first in a planned trilogy from director Renny Harlin, which focuses on a trio of killers who break into people’s homes. It was previously announced to serve as an exploration of the main trio of killers, the Man in the Mask, Dollface, and Pin-Up Girl.

Now, Lionsgate Movies has released a trailer ahead of The Strangers: Chapter 1‘s release, teasing an origin story for the three killers.

The trailer teases a vacation for couple Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez) in an odd town. However, things go awry when the main trio of murderers attack them, chasing them around their cabin as they desperately try to escape. Still from the film were also released, which can be seen below:

Harlin is best known for directing horror sequels like A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and Exorcist: The Beginning, as well as action movies such as Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2. For The Strangers trilogy, the director plans to expand on who the killers are, maintaining continuity with both the original film and its sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night. As the trailer already indicates, the movie will have its fair share of references to the movies that have come before.

The newest installment is clearly paying homage to the original movie, with a similar premise of the trio tormenting a couple. One of the last shots in the trailer mirrors a classic moment from the first film, with all three killers standing over their captive victims. While the film takes place in the same universe as its predecessors, it seems there will be plenty of events mirroring the original in a new setting. However, its more isolated setting means it will feel very different from the first movie.

With so many elements similar to the original, The Strangers: Chapter 1 is shaping up to be familiar territory for anyone who has seen the first movie. However, it also implies that Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 in the forthcoming trilogy will be using this as a springboard for a different style of story. How the trilogy develops following the first release likely won’t be revealed until after the movie has come out.
