“The Sons of Giants”: Godzilla’s Secret Society Fixes the Franchise’s Biggest Plot Hole

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #3 Godzilla is one of the most recognizable fictional characters in the history of film, as the iconic vision of a giant, ancient monster obliterating entire cities like it’s nothing is enough to strike fear into the hearts of anyone who sees it (even in the later depictions, where technically Godzilla is a hero). However, that does call into question one very important point in terms of the franchise’s established canon: how has Godzilla and the other kaiju remained virtually a mystery? And how have their mere existence not been recorded in human history? Well, one story actually addresses (and fixes) this apparent plot hole in Godzilla lore.

Godzilla made his debut in the 1954 Japanese film directed and co-written by Ishiro Honda. Originally, Godzilla was merely a metaphor for the destructive power of nuclear weapons following the devastation of such weapons used by the United States against Japan during World War II less than a decade earlier. However, as popularity for the character grew, so, too, did the lore surrounding him. Pretty soon, Godzilla had a whole slew of friends and enemies, both human and kaiju alike, with the addition of alien threats in some cases as well. Not only that, but the history of Godzilla grew as well, as it was revealed that he wasn’t simply a creature created from nuclear radiation, but was actually an ancient beast akin to an earthbound god or Old One. Through the ages, Godzilla and the other kaiju would rise and reshape the world around them in immensely significant ways. And now, fans finally know how those instances have remained a secret all this time: a ‘monster-worshiping cult’, as it’s described, known as the Sons of Giants.

Cult-Like Secret Society Embedded In Human Civilization Covers Up Godzilla Sightings

“The Sons of Giants”: Godzilla’s Secret Society Fixes the Franchise’s Biggest Plot Hole

In Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #3 by Frank Tieri and Inaki Miranda, a pirate awaiting the noose in 14th century England is telling his captors about an island dubbed Monster Island (which should be familiar to Godzilla fans) as well as the island’s kaiju inhabitants. Not only does the pirate expose the existence of these monsters, but he also speaks of a secret society that has taken on the responsibility of hiding the truth of their existence, one that is so embedded in human civilization, that even Queen Elizabeth herself is a member.

With the expansion of Godzilla lore to make the character more fleshed out and less of a metaphor for real-world atrocities, there has always been that one glaring plot hole: how are humans still surprised when Godzilla attacks in the modern day? If these kaiju have truly been around since before the formation of humanity – with some civilizations even openly worshiping them as gods – there should have been records found by modern archaeologists and historians. Not only that, but in the current Godzilla films, there is even an entire organization known as Monarch that’s dedicated to uncovering the truth of these beasts. With their implied prevalence throughout history, that should have been no problem to the point where Monarch’s very existence would have been unnecessary. However, with an immensely influential group like the Sons of Giants working in the background to erase Godzilla and the other kaiju from history faster than anyone can record them, it makes sense that they’ve been a secret all this time.

This issue introduced the idea of the Sons of Giants, though the group’s influence has been felt in every corner of the established canon, as Godzilla’s secret society has been fixing the franchise’s biggest plot hole all along – fans just didn’t know it until now.
