The Simpsons is one of the longest-running animated comedies on TV and predates the internet itself. For many people in their 20s, it’s a show that has always been on TV. Perhaps that’s the reason for all the great Simpsons memes that have been circulating the internet since the early days of entertaining internet content. Even if you don’t watch the show, you’ve probably seen Ralph Wiggum’s insnocent yellow face exclaiming “I’m in danger” or him crashing head-first through a window at one point or another.
In one particularly dramatic moment in Ralph’s life, Lisa breaks his heart on live TV. Sometime after, an iconic meme was born. To make this hilarious meme, content creators will often key out the TV screen to show characters from other films and television shows at the moment of heartbreak. Kakyoin And The World
Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure is full of extremely dramatic and sometimes violent fight sequences. The show takes place across decades with a host of different characters. This episode takes place in the 1980s and involved Dio and Noriaki Kakyoin. In this case, this is the moment when Kakyoin gets punched through the chest by Dio’s powerful stand, The World.
While this is a brutal fight for Kakyoin, he lives to die another day. In the last moments of his life, he is able to help Joseph realize The World’s ability to stop time.
Scorpia
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is a Netflix reboot of a spinoff of the early 1980s animated series. This show is filled with dynamic and heroic female characters.
Scorpia is one of these characters, originally belonging to The Horde but turning against it when she begins to realize its oppressive nature. Scorpia deals with a lot leading up to this, including a rocky friendship with Catra that often leaves her emotionally hurt, especially when Catra threatens to send her to Beast Island.
Luke’s Character
After Star Wars: The Last Jedi came out in 2017, some Star Wars fans were disappointed with the direction that Luke Skywalker’s character had taken. Luke Skywalker embodied a lot of what fans loved about Star Wars, a young farm worker coming from humble beginnings destined to become one of the most forceful Jedis in the universe.
Some critics felt that Luke was a shell of his former self, going from a strong hero and powerful Jedi who destroyed the Death Star to an isolated loner who didn’t get the moment of redemption he deserved in The Last Jedi. Given this, it’s easy to understand where this meme came from.
Bojack At The Planetarium
Who could forget one of the most heart-wrenching scenes from Bojack Horseman, when Bojack realizes that his longtime costar and friend Sarah Lynn had overdosed after they both went on a bender together.
Bojack and Sarah Lynn had a complicated relationship throughout the entirety of the show – they used and abused each other, took advantage of each other and took comfort in and sometimes even encouraged each other’s addictions. In a lot of ways, Sarah Lynn’s character was more powerful and influential after her death, and she would haunt Bojack to the point of him finally taking responsibility for himself.
Catra’s Broken Heart
Once Adora joined her captors, the Princess Rebellion, after having such a prominent career within the Horde, it comes as a huge shock to her best friend Catra, who is still in the Horde during the scene from which this meme originates.
The Horde teaches each of its members that the Princess Rebellion is evil, when in fact, they are the ones committing the atrocities and the Princess Rebellion are on the side of justice. It’s apparent from the difficulties in Catra and Scoripa’s relationship that Catra would take a long time to shake off the conditioning of the Horde and turn to the good side.
Amythest And Peridot
This meme depicts Lisa and Bart as Amythest and Peridot from Steven Universe. It’s a clever parallel because in a lot of ways the characters are similar: Peridot and Lisa are more intelligent, calculating and sensitive, while Peridot and Bart are pranksters that love joking around and don’t take anything too seriously.
It took a while for Amethyst (and the rest of the Crystal Gems) to warm up to Peridot, who was very conditioned to The Great Diamond Authority. After spending time with Steven and the Gems, she eventually becomes one of their strongest allies.
Jojo Mourns Caesar
This was another very dramatic moment in Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure, when Jojo realizes he stumbled upon Caesar Zeppeli’s body underneath a cross-shaped stone. Caesar was a great ally to Jojo, a skilled fighter with many stands and abilities who fought valiantly against Wamuu.
Like many animes, Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure can be almost comedically dramatic at times. While this is a heart-wrenching moment in the show, in the context of this meme is extreme in its dramatic sadness, Jojo’s face is pretty funny.
Steve Rogers
As Captain America and a member of one of the all-powerful Avengers, Steve Rogers has an enormous amount of responsibility for one individual. This meme depicts the moment he realizes that he can never truly have a normal life, not only because of his heroic responsibilities but because his life has never been normal ever since undergoing his super-soldier treatment in an attempt to enlist in the U.S. Army for World War II.
Waking up in the 21st century after being unconscious since the 1940s is traumatic enough, but as audiences know, his life would only become more complicated as one of the Avengers. A picket fence life would never be in the cards for Steve Rogers.
When Connie Got Hurt By Steven
One of the most tragic arcs in Steven Universe has got to be Connie and Steven’s breakup. Steven was so bent out of shape and lost without Connie, at one point he allows Kevin, one of the most arrogant characters in the show, to help win her back. Kevin tells Steven, “Your life is good, too … you don’t need to talk to her.” Steven takes his advice and plays it so cool he comes off as cold.
After Connie sees Steven hanging out and laughing with Kevin (who they both despise), she gives him this sad look. It isn’t until Steven drops the act and becomes his emotional and lovable self again that they are able to heal and continue their relationship.
Ralph And Johnny
The Room is an accidental comedy that will live in infamy for all time, and like Ralph Wiggum, there are a lot of unfortunate things that happen to Tommy Wiseau’s character, Johnny, although many of them are more extreme.
Throughout the duration of the film, he is betrayed by his best friend, taken advantaged of, lied to, and soon discovers that his girlfriend Lisa is cheating on him, which gives us the iconic line of dialogue, “You’re tearing me apart Lisa!” which is one of the unfortunate things both he and Ralph have in common.
