The Scrubs Cast’s Cameo In It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie Explained

The cast of Scrubs made a special cameo appearance in It’s A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie. Scrubs is a classic sitcom from the 2000s that followed medical intern J.D., with the pilot episode starting on his very first day in the Sacred Heart Hospital. Zach Braff’s J.D. was prone to odd daydreams and asides, but while the show was frequently very funny, it also took the medical drama side of things seriously. Scrubs featured several heartbreaking scenes, and J.D. and the rest of the cast – including Sarah Chalke’s Elliot, Donald Faison’s Turk and John C. McGinley’s Dr. Cox – faced no end of stress and trauma on the job.

Scrubs was canceled after season 9, though the final season – which focused mostly on a new group of med students while the original cast played supporting roles – is considered the worst. While there’s occasional talk of reviving Scrubs in some form, it has yet to happen, and given the mixed success most sitcom reboots are met with, that could be for the best.

The cast of Scrubs also made a brief but funny cameo in 2002’s It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie. This holiday special takes inspiration from It’s A Wonderful Life, with Kermit the Frog trying to save the Muppet Theatre from a bank owner named Miss Bitterman, who wants to rip it down to build a nightclub. Kermit is also trying to find stars for their Christmas show and is aided by Scream 2022’s David Arquette as an angel. The Scrubs cast’s cameo in It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie comes about in a scene where Miss Piggy is “acting” with them.

This It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie cameo scene opens with what appears to be a regular episode of Scrubs, only for Miss Piggy to be revealed as the patient. While she’s supposed to be an extra, she instead suggests becoming part of the main cast and maybe replacing Judy Reyes’ Carla – who isn’t pleased with this notion – before Kermit begs Miss Piggy to return for the show. Since she’s soon fired from her bit part anyway, this doesn’t leave her with much of a choice and she curses out the Scrubs‘ cast as she leaves.

The Scrubs cast’s It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie cameo is short but sweet, with Braff, Faison, McGinley and Reyes appearing alongside Janitor (whose real name is Glenn Matthews) actor Neil Flynn and even creator Bill Lawrence. Other celebrity cameos in It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie include Joe Rogen and Carson Daly, though Snoop Dogg’s scene was later cut, apparently because of appearing in X-rated projects around the time of It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie being produced.
