“The Santa Carla Hunters Union”: The Lost Boys Sequel Comic Answers 1 Shocking Question From the ‘80s Cult Vampire Film

A comic sequel to the 1987 cult classic film, The Lost Boys, reveals shocking information about the town of Santa Carla and its residents, both dead and alive, who call the “Murder Capital of the World” home. Furthermore, these comics answered important questions left by the film. As it turns out, at least one seemingly oblivious character knew far more than what he let on in the film.

The Lost Boys film ends with Grandpa Emerson giving one last quote, “One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach: all the damn vampires.” While the intention was to just have a comedic line to end the film on, the line left questions for fans. How widely known is it that vampires exist in Santa Carla? Has Grandpa Emerson faced vampires before? The Lost Boys (2019) #1 by Tim Seeley and Scott Godlewski answers these questions in a shocking way, revealing hidden information about Grandpa Emerson and Santa Carla.

Vertigo’s The Lost Boys sequel finally gave fans of the movie a worthy sequel. The comic picks up the story shortly after the events of the film.

The Lost Boys‘ Vampire Hunters Battle Other Creatures, Too

Other creatures exist in the Lost Boys universe

Dubbed the Santa Carla Hunters’ Union, the group is dedicated to hunting more than just vampires. In a meeting led by Grandpa Emerson, mummies and werewolves are also discussed by the Union. The idea of more than just vampires existing ties into the controversial 2010 sequel The Lost Boys: The Thirst, which confirms the existence of werewolves in The Lost Boys franchise. Furthermore, the existence of other monsters within Santa Carla opens up opportunities for another run of comics.

The Santa Carla Hunters’ Union Is In A Sad State

Lost Boys vampire hunters reject a new member

The state of the Santa Carla Hunters’ Union makes it easy to infer how much the average resident knows about vampires. There are a total of seven members at the meeting, including Grandpa Emerson. Every member is a senior citizen. While the Union does take new members, they only receive one application a month from the same person. Therefore, they aren’t actively recruiting. Even the Emerson family, who are aware of vampires existing, think he’s at the VFW. This leads to the theory that at one point Santa Carla’s vampires were more well-known, but knowledge of them has faded.

Although the existence of a union of vampire hunters in Santa Carla answers some questions, it leaves others unanswered. For example, why haven’t the hunters found a way to prove the existence of vampires to warn everyone else? Even though The Lost Boys comic series ended in 2019 after running for six issues, there is plenty of room for another run. Future comics could focus on the formation of the Santa Carla Hunters’ Union, the other monsters of Santa Carla, or could follow up on the 2019 comics’ cliffhanger ending. The introduction of the Santa Carla Hunters’ Union opens up a whole host of possibilities, proving that Grandpa Emerson isn’t the only one in The Lost Boys universe who’s sick of “all the damn vampires.”
