The Return of DC’s Milestone Universe Showcased in New Trailer

DC’s Milestone Comics reboot is in full swing as the Dakotaverse comes to life in a new trailer that includes Static, Hardware, Icon, and Rocket. The teaser features a glimpse of Dakota City following the Big Bang, which set in motion a major series of events.

Fans are celebrating the return of their favorite superheroes as Static: Season One #1 is now available, marking the official start of the new Milestone series. After a two-decade-long hiatus from comics, returning creators such as Denys Cowan, Reginald Hudlin, and ChrisCross are teaming up with fresh talent such as Static artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey, Hardware writer Brandon Thomas, and others to bring back the Dakotaverse, the interconnected universe that contains the characters published by Milestone Media. The electrifying and fresh vision of the Dakotaverse was first announced during DC Fandome.

In commemoration of the rebooted Milestone Comics, DC Comics has released a trailer taking readers through Dakota City and introducing the three new series’ headlining superheroes — Static, Icon & Rocket, and Hardware. The teaser references events in Milestone Returns: Infinite Edition #0, which changed the city of Dakota forever. A protest for Black Lives Matter turns into an assault by police on Dakota’s youth, which quickly becomes known as the Big Bang. When an experimental Alva Industries gas is dispersed, many teenagers die but others gain unique powers, including Virgil Hawkins who finds himself able to generate electricity. Meanwhile, brilliant inventor Curtis Metcalf leaves Alva Industries to pursue justice with his self-made armored suit. As seen in the trailer, Raquel Ervin meets a 200-year-old alien who goes by the identity Augustus Freeman IV. Upon giving her a belt utilizing alien technology that can give its user’s powers, they become the duo known as Icon and Rocket.

With the sensibility of a motion comic, the trailer attributes voices to the heroes, who just recently entered the game in their individual stories. While resembling their original character designs, the re-imagined protectors of Dakota City have been updated to better represent 2021. Although the city of Dakota is obviously fictitious similar to Gotham, Metropolis, or Central City, it’s clear that it is still grounded in the real world. Curtis Metcalf AKA Hardware is fighting a relatable battle, as corporate elites are taking advantage of him. Similarly, high school student Virgil Hawkins AKA Static is going through his teenage years with racism on display through both authoritative figures and his peers.

It’s been said that this corner of the DC Universe will be its own thing, not set in the same continuity as the mainstream canon. With the superheroes’ close proximity to each other in Dakota, it feels like a crossover is inevitable. This trailer does an excellent job drawing the lines between each of their stories, paving the way for a team-up at the end of their first seasons. Together, Static, Hardware, Icon, and Rocket could join together to be Dakota’s Milestones, almost like a “Justice League Dakota.”
