The Powerpuff Girls Are Adding a Fourth Team Member

The Powerpuff Girls will officially add a fourth member to the team later this month, but a first look at the character and her voice actress have already been revealed. The trio of superheroes created out of sugar, spice, and everything nice – and some Chemical X – led their own animated series on Cartoon Network from 1998 to 2005. Created by Craig McCracken, the series followed Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup through their many heroic adventures, taking on villains like Mojo Jojo, Him, and Princess Morbucks. Though the original series concluded in 2005, Cartoon Network rebooted The Powerpuff Girls in 2016 for a new generation of viewers.

The premiere of The Powerpuff Girls received middling reviews from critics, but the series was popular enough with its target audience that Cartoon Network renewed it for season 2, which debuted earlier this year. Now, The Powerpuff Girls will break new ground by adding a fourth official member to the team.

EW reported that the fourth Powerpuff Girl will be unveiled on Cartoon Network Sunday September 17 at 5:30pm ET during the premiere of a five-part movie event titled The Powerpuff Girls: Power of Four. Additionally, EW unveiled an image of the all-new Powerpuff Girl in silhouette from behind, while Cartoon Network revealed a similar image on Twitter of the new team member in silhouette from the front. While it seemed Cartoon Network was dedicated to keeping the details of this new character under wraps, an image of the fourth Powerpuff Girl was spotted in a Russian promo for the network, hosted on YouTube by user ubuntuegor. After the first look at the character was leaked, singer Toya Delazy confirmed on Twitter that she’ll be portraying this new Powerpuff Girl – whose name we still don’t know. Take a look at an image of the new character and Delazy’s confirmation below:

In a statement to NME, Senior Vice President at Turner Broadcasting in Southern Europe and Africa Jaime Ondarza said of the casting: “Toya is definitely a perfect fit as the fourth Powerpuff Girl. She is confident, bubbly and quirky, all the values that we are familiar with, love and appreciate. We have a lot of surprises up our sleeves.” It’s unclear what kind of surprises Ondarza may be teasing in his statement, but it may have something to do with the new character’s name and/or how exactly she comes to be part of the Powerpuff Girls team.

Of course, as many fans have pointed out, this won’t be the first time a fourth member has joined the Powerpuff Girls since the original series featured an episode titled ‘Twisted Sister’ in which Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup created a new sister named Bunny. However, the character of Bunny was short-lived, exploding at the end of the episode and never returned to the series. Additionally, as has been pointed out by many fans of the series, this new character marks the first Black Powerpuff Girl on the series, a major step forward for inclusivity on the series.

It’s unclear whether this new character will have been created by Professor Utonium, the girls, or someone else, but fans of The Powerpuff Girls will get to find out all about the new team member when she debuts on the series later this month.
