Pixar is working on two high-profile sequels, but the best Pixar sequel idea is The Good Dinosaur 2. Following Bob Iger’s return to Disney, the two-time CEO announced that Pixar will develop Inside Out 2 and Toy Story 5, the first of which is a sequel to a movie that made over $800 million, and the second of which is part of a three-billion-dollar franchise. Given the phenomenal box office successes, it’s hardly surprising that more sequels are on the way. However, Pixar clearly takes pride in its movies and is the gold standard of animation, so the studio likely has great story ideas too.
But while Toy Story 5 has a potentially great villain, The Good Dinosaur 2 would be way better. The Good Dinosaur has unfortunately become Pixar’s most forgotten movie, but it had a great premise, as it questioned what would happen if the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs didn’t hit Earth, and it imagined a world where dinosaurs and humans shared the planet. Unfortunately, it didn’t capitalize on the potential of that idea and that’s where the possible sequel comes in, as The Good Dinosaur 2 can be everything that its predecessor should have been.
The Good Dinosaur Has The Most Potential For A Pixar Sequel
Though The Good Dinosaur was doomed from the start, its premise was a genius idea, but Pixar didn’t follow through on the amazing potential. The movie should have been set millions of years later when humans had built modern-day civilization around dinosaurs. It’s a classic Pixar idea that could be full of clever world building akin to Monsters Inc. The concept could have imagined how roads, skyscrapers, vehicles, and other things humans can’t live without were made to cater to giant creatures like the T-Rex. Instead, the 2015 movie is still set millions of years ago in the prehistoric era that follows caveboy Spot, which wasn’t anywhere near as exciting.
However, this could still be the premise of a sequel to the 2015 dinosaur movie. Even though The Good Dinosaur is set millions of years ago, that doesn’t mean The Good Dinosaur 2 can’t be set millions of years later in the present. Few fans have a deep connection to either Spot or the Apatosaurus, Arlo, as they do with Woody or Buzz Lightyear, so the sequel could feature brand-new, modern-day main characters. And given that Pixar loves hiding Easter eggs and references in their films, it could easily be alluded to that the modern-day characters’ ancestors are Arlo and Spot.
The Good Dinosaur 2 Could Still Be A Hit Despite The Original’s Underperformance
The Good Dinosaur only made $332 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), which may sound like a lot, but it’s a shocking underperformance when compared to other Pixar releases and the film’s $200 million budget. However, even though it was a box office failure and wasn’t the typical Pixar critical hit, The Good Dinosaur 2 could still be a success. The Monsters Inc.-like approach and a different tone give it the potential to be a billion-dollar movie. In fact, being completely disconnected from the first movie with both its setting, time period, and characters could even help the sequel’s potential.
