In Cobra Commander #4, Nemesis Enforcer excommunicates the protagonist from Cobra-La, after correctly deducing that Cobra’s future leader plans to betray them all and take the power for himself. The Commander manages to defeat the Enforcer, thanks to a supercharge of his Transformers-based weaponry. After claiming the Dreadnoks’ hidden store of Energon for himself, the Commander learns that the biker gang’s biggest buyer is none other than Destro. Readers of the Energon Universe’s other debut G.I. Joe title, Duke, already know that Destro has been using Energon to develop new, high-powered weaponry via M.A.R.S. Industries, his powerful weapons manufacturing company.

The Commander sets his sights on the silver-masked arms dealer, setting up a huge confrontation. So far, it has been exciting for readers to witness the pieces of the Cobra terrorist organization coming together in the Energon Universe continuity; watching the Commander manipulate these various factions has made evident the villain’s cunning intellect, and established him in a very distinct way from earlier incarnations. As a result, his dynamic with Destro should be expected to have its own unique Energon-spin on what Joe fans have traditionally come to expect from the rivals.

Considering that Destro is getting his own miniseries this summer, following the completion of Cobra Commander, it sounds like the Commander still has quite the fight on his hands before officially forming his Cobra army. Famously, Cobra Commander and his Cobra army only came into existence after Marvel Comics suggested to Hasbro that America’s elite fighting force needed villains to fight, so fans can expect that the Cobra terrorist organization will make its debut in the Energon Universe version of G.I. Joe continuity sooner rather than later.
