The PC Gaming Show: Top 10 Highlights

Following the excellent Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, the Summer Game Fest, also known as Not-E3, continued with the PC Gaming Show on June 12, which is run by PC Gamer. Since both PC Gamer and GamesRadar are owned by the same company, the PC Gaming Show was marketed as a double-header with The Future Games Show, which was streamed on June 11 and hosted by GamesRadar.

Streamed at 3:30 p.m. EDT at the official twitchgaming channel and PC Gamer channels, the PC Gaming Show presented both upcoming PC games and new hardware. Some of these announcements, which included Scorn, especially stood out.

Build Cities On Mountains In Laysara: Summit Kingdom

Scheduled to release in early 2023, Laysara: Summit Kingdom is a unique city builder that has players build their cities on mountains. After the Kingdom of Laysara was forced out of the lowlands, they now need to rebuild their cities on multiple different mountains instead. Each of the mountains has its own weather conditions, resources, layouts, and challenges, which means players will need to plan their cities accordingly and develop a trading system between the cities.

While building and running the cities, players will need to watch out for natural disasters such as avalanches. Once the various levels of the city are established, the player can finally fully triumph over the mountain by building a temple on the summit.

The Alters Follows A Group Of Clones

Created by 11 bit studios, who are best known for the survival city-builder Frostpunk, The Alters is a science fiction psychological adventure game that doesn’t have a release date yet. When a simple worker named Jan Dolski crash lands on a distant planet, he finds himself stranded with nobody to help him. In order to survive, Jan decides to create clones of himself called “The Alters” that will help with the necessary work.

Each of these Alters is based on different parts of Jan’s life, which leads to philosophical and psychological questions that he could have never anticipated. With each Alter making different choices and being at varying stages of life, they all represent the choices Jan could have made or the lives he could have lived.

Decarnation Is A Beautifully Grotesque Horror Game

Ever since the release of the cult-classic Yume Nikki, the RPG Maker horror genre has had plenty of excellent titles and has become a popular subgenre. During the PC Gaming Show, another interesting upcoming RPG Maker horror game was shown that could possibly be added to the list: Decarnation. Planned to be released in 2023, the game follows a struggling cabaret dancer named Gloria, who lives in Paris during the year 1990.

While struggling with her career, relationships, and mental health, she is seemingly saved by a mysterious benefactor, but things may not be as they seem. Inspired by films such as Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, this survival horror game promises to combine both real-world and psychological terrors that will keep players on edge until the end.

Demonschool Provides A New Spin On The Tactical Genre

Inspired by the Persona series, Demonschool is a tactical RPG that’s scheduled to release in 2023. The game follows a young woman named Faye, who is the last member of the only demon-hunting family that still exists, and her companions as they fight creatures in both the human and demon worlds while also navigating through their university lives on a mysterious island.

Though only three other party members have been shown so far, the final game will have 15 unique characters that the player will build relationships with and complete side quests for. Besides planning battles, players will need to plan their schedule each day in order to properly level up their skills and complete objectives. Along with all of this, the game also has a unique tactical battle system where units react contextually and movements are planned all at once.

Immortality Is A Found Footage FMV Game

Developed by Sam Barlow, who is best known for creating Her Story and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Immortality is an upcoming FMV mystery game that’s releasing on July 26. After a fictional actress named Marissa Marcel has gone missing, the player must examine the footage from three of her starring films, which were all never released and thought to be lost media. Using this found footage, the player will try to uncover what happened to her.

During the PC Gaming Show, some of the game’s footage and gameplay was finally shown. From this new trailer, it seems that the game will be similar to Her Story because it looks like players will need to find details in certain clips in order to find other clips.

Build A Life In A Cyberpunk City In Nivalis

Created by Ion Lands, who also developed the award-winning exploration game Cloudpunk, Nivalis is a cyberpunk life sim that doesn’t have a release date yet and takes place in the same universe as Cloudpunk. In this “slice-of-life” sim, the player chooses how they live their life in the city of Nivalis. This includes developing their own business, which can be anything from a ramen stand to a nightclub.

Besides working, players can go fishing, grow their own ingredients, and buy and customize their own homes. As they live in the city, they will meet and befriend many unique characters, and the player might even find love.

Scorn Is A Horror Game Inspired By H. R. Giger

Scheduled to release on Oct. 21, Scorn is a first-person survival horror Metroidvania and one of the most anticipated horror games of this year. Inspired by the works of H. R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński, the game has the player stranded and lost on an alien planet that features techno-organic environments, machines, and weapons.

As the player explores the world, they will meet various characters, solve puzzles, and fight enemies. To access new areas, players will need to find new items and weapons that will give the player new skills. Despite other characters existing, the game mostly uses environmental storytelling, so players need to pay attention to their surroundings.

Gloomwood Harkens Back To The Classic Thief Series

Inspired by the historic Thief franchise and survival horror titles from the late ’90s to early 2000s, Gloomwood is a stealth horror FPS immersive sim that’s being published by New Blood Interactive, who also published other beloved horror titles such as Dusk and Faith. Although the full game doesn’t have a release date yet, the trailer during the PC Gaming Show revealed that Gloomwood will be released in Early Access on Aug. 16.

After the player is abducted, they find themself in a dark Victorian city that’s been horrifically transformed by an ancient curse. In order to escape, the player will need to confront strange creatures, obtain unique weapons, and use their cunning to navigate environments where everything reacts realistically to the player.

Fan-made Mod Half-Life Alyx: Levitation Provides A Full Campaign

Since the release of the 2020 virtual reality FPS Half-Life: Alyx, fans have been eagerly waiting for news on the possible next installment of the historic Half-Life franchise. While new news still hasn’t surfaced, fans have been developing a mod that provides a short possible sequel to Half-Life: Alyx titled Half-Life Alyx: Levitation.

In this four-to-five hour VR campaign, Alyx Vance travels to a strange floating building in Sector X after receiving a distress signal from two resistance members. During the PC Gaming Show, viewers got to see seven minutes of uncut footage from the mod.

The System Shock Reboot Brings Back The Iconic Series

Planned to be released in 2022, System Shock is a reboot of the historic 1994 action-adventure title of the same name. Developed by Nightdive Studios, who are known for updating and rereleasing abandonware games, the game retains the same characters, story, levels, and enemies, but many aspects have been updated to coincide with the modern era.

Since Nightdive Studios was founded because the CEO, Stephen Kick, wanted to play System Shock 2 again, it’s not surprising that the studio is working hard to create a faithful reboot for the series. In the PC Gaming Showcase, new gameplay footage was shown that already demonstrated how much larger and more detailed the game’s world had become.
