The Orville Season 3 Video Shows Star Wars Sized Space Battle

A recently released video promoting The Orville season 3 has teased large-scale Star Wars-like space battles in Seth McFarlane’s sci-fi comedy series. The series stars McFarlane as the Orville’s commanding officer Captain Ed Mercer. McFarlane stars alongside Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Gerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Halston Sage, J.Lee, Mark Jackson, and Jessica  Szohr.

A 25th Century interstellar spacecraft built for exploration, the USS Orville is the titular spacecraft and primary setting of McFarlane’s live-action sci-fi comedy-drama. Mcfarlane portrays Mercer, a captain who fell into a life of hangovers and hand-off approaches to his duties when his divorce throws him off a bright future. Despite his slip-ups, Mercer is assigned to the Orville at the recommendation of his ex-wife and first officer Commander Kelly Grayson (Palicki), and the two put aside their differences as they and the crew embark on intergalactic adventures. After a long hiatus and a teaser image for The Orville season 3 released in December, fans of the series have been treated to a glimpse of the upcoming third season, titled The Orville: New Horizons, teasing the season’s grand scale.

Uploaded to The Orville‘s Twitter account, the video features a short action-packed clip of the upcoming season. The clip features a colossal space battle between Union ships and an enemy fleet, with other exploratory vessels like the Orville being shot down and crashing into moons. The action then cuts to Orville’s chaotic interior, as crew members run through destroyed corridors and collapsing elevators, with the preview ending with a fearsome alien imposter impersonating Jackson’s artificial lifeform. The clip then ends with an extended look at the series’ opening titles, showing the titular craft leave a union fleet to explore the unknown reaches of the galaxy. Check out the short clip below.

The Orville season 3 is set to air on Hulu and will be the first to debut following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox and its intellectual properties. The season had begun production in October 2019 but had to be placed on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Production resumed in December 2020 once the right measures had been implemented for production, but had to be paused once more in January 2021 following a COVID surge, before starting again in February and wrapping in March. The season will also mark the final performance of Norm Macdonald as Lt. Yaphit, as the comedian sadly passed away in 2021. Following numerous production woes, Hulu originally revealed the release date in September 2021, planning the series for a March 2021 release date, before pushing the premiere back to June 2.

While The Orville is a loving parody of sci-fi works like Star Wars and Star Trek, the recently released clip shows that the series is capable of spectacle on par with both long-running franchises. The battle depicted in the clip is an impressive scale for TV productions, while the focus on Orville’s crew helps ground the tension of the situation. With New Horizon‘s action already shaping up to be a visual treat, fans anticipate where McFarlane’s intergalactic adventure may take them next.
